Question Boot-Black Screen- Password required - ??????
Gateway, pentium 2, windows 98

On boot, after a short main screen with an option to press F1 the computer goes directly to a black screen asking for a password.

This is an old computer that I am trying to set up for daughter #2, don't remember the password. It gives the option to press F1 to go to the setup screen, but it doesn't go to the setup screen after you press the F1 button, it goes directly back to this password screen.

My question is, is there a way around this particular screen or some way to figure out what the password is?

Thanks!
Susan

Remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for 30 minutes, replace it and try again. Power should be totally disconnected.

Sounds like its a BIOS password, that will be cleared by the removal - reinstallation of the battery
