Example of system specs......
SC,

Here is an example of just some of the "system specs":

Compaq 1700T Laptop
Windows XP Home
Intel P3 600 Mhtz
196 MB Ram
6 GB Hard disk drive
DVD-Rom
56K modem made by so and so
such and such video card
etc., etc.

To put is simply, they want to know what your PC is and what is inside of it. You got it started when you said that you have Win 98 se. All of that stuff that the ads mention when it comes to these nifty little money suckers , those are the specs. Now, that usually just gives people helping a starting point, but then they can ask more specific questions, and be able to tell you where things are located. Including any additional system specs that they need.

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

That's a link to BelArc advisor. Download and run it. It will give you all the information you need. You can then go to the toolbar to File>save as. Save it as a text file. Then you can attach that file or copy and paste the pertinent information into a post here.

I know you are frustrated. But without all the information nobody is going to be able to help.

I also have worked with you before and know you can do this.
Take your time and try to remember.

It's late here now, almost midnight. I am going to sign off. Someone else will be along to help you out.
Hang in there.

Mo

EDIT:
Keep monitoring those resources. When you get the out of memory message, how low are your resources?

Please go back and read all the questions and suggestions made again. Implement the suggestions and please post the answers to the questions.

Believe me, you do not want to run Windows98 24/7 for several reasons.

Sheesh, we have the same display adapter, monitor and printer

My guess is that you may in fact have a problem with Photoshop wasting memory resources. I've heard it's a memory hog. Also if you happen to have a screen saver kicking in at any time, it would be a good idea to disable that. Many of them don't always return resources properly, even the MS ones.

Well, I'm not sure what the interest in all your installed programs was. Personally I would just be concerned with what is running, or has been run, when you get the problem.

When it comes to resources, it is not what is installed that counts. It is what is running at the time. And unfortunately sometimes it is what had been running because some programs do not return resources when closed.

That's a long list. Go through it and anything you are not sure about, post. Someone will help you out as to what those entries are.

EDIT: Rog,
You type faster than I do.

SweetC,
If youwould please go back and read my previous posts and answer those questions. Download Startup Log and see what is running at start. If not sure, you can paste the contents into a post here.

I used to try and create icons, and used a program which ran my resources to dangerous levels very quickly. I didn't pay attention because I was busy. It can happen fast.

One thing I really need is for you to please go back and answer the questions I asked. Fir example, do your system freezes happen when the out of memory message appears?

As I am on my computer alot. So I will do defrag one day , then scan disk the next then virus check , then ad aware. then start over. is that doing way to much? again sorry was not meaning to ignore you.

Sweet C,
No need to apologize. I know you were not ignoring me. Sometimes when these threads are long or there is a lot of information/advice given, there is a tendency for that information /advice to be lost.

Your startups are very clean.
Unless you are scheduling a task, you can uncheck mstask.

I know you have been here before and that must have been when you cleaned your startups.

The resource problem has to be that you are running programs which deplete resources rapidly. Monitor the resources and when you see them getting below 20%, close some Windows and programs. See if they come back up. If not, save your work and reboot. Learn how to manage this.
If you are using a resource intensive program, run only that program or be prepared for the out of memory to come quickly.

WOW. You are defragging too often. You will get various opnions on this. I defrag about once or twice a month depending on what I have been doing. If I do a major cleanup, removing programs, etc. I will defrag then. In fact, you should clean up your disk before doing a defrag. Do a scandisk and then the defrag.

Does your entire system freeze when running AV /defrag /scandisk? Or are you just not able to complete these tasks?

My entire computer freezes when trying to run these programs.. i do alot of work in Paint shop pro and animation shop. I have to defrag often or else it takes 2 to 3 hours to do it. sorry I do do the scan disk first then the defrag it just gets soooooooo frustrating when your in the middle of something and you get that message. I do leave my resources meter open now. its weird though that I all of a sudden started to get this message. I never got it before.

Okay again thanks for the help. As usual you all are great at helping people out. I only wish that I can help others in here with some problems one day to return the favour you all do daily for every one in here

I have often read Graphics people posting that you should have at least 256 MB of RAM. You only have 128 MB.

Have you ever tested yours? You say this just started happening. Let's look at your RAM as well.

You can go here and download Doc Memory. See how yours measures up.

Sorry. I have not been around. Had major computer problems.

How far did you get? Have you made the floppy yet?

I'll be around tomorrow if nobody else comes around in the meantime with instructions. I have to sign off now. It's after midnight.
