Windows ME beeping. What the beep?
I have a Gateway laptop with Windows ME/2000. It pretty old, but has worked well for a long time. Just recently, It started this fainting beeping noise. It changes pitch a lot and sometimes it just goes away completely. I don't have a CD in the drive or anything, and I don't think it's coming out of the speakers. Is my computer 'bout to croak?
Thanks,
Tom

Could be a BIOS alarm to inform you of an over temperature and/or a fan failure. Pop the side off the case and inspect for dust bunnies on your cooling devices - ie fans, heatsinks etc, clean as necessary. Also, with side off, apply power and see if the fans are spinning as they should, replace any that do not spin, clean ones that are clogged up.

my fans are working fine, I can't pop the side off because it's a laptop. I never have had it get hot either. Any other ideas?

You have to be honest here really, its getting a bit old now,and though it has performed well over the years it is not really worth spending any money on ....however if you click on this site and scroll down the page a little there are lists of meaning for the beeps http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml
