Solved: Windows ME and UBUNTU
I have an old 80.6 gig Maxtor hd. It has ME and Ubuntu on it. Is there any way to get Ubuntu off without bothering the ME OS. I need all the space now for ME. I know it is old, but the friend I am giving it to has a 20 gig hd with ME and only 254 RAM that is the max RAM he can put on the motherboad. So if I can remove Ubuntu he can have a little better computer that has 1 gig of RAM and he is familiar with ME. I am looking for my old hard drive that had XP on it before I got the new computers with Vista, but so far no luck.

Your friend may have experience with Windows ME, but you may consider installing Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, because Windows ME will probably have issues addressing 1GB RAM. MS-DOS based Windows (3.x, 3.1x, 95/98/ME) can generally only address up to 512MB. Even so, computers originally manufactured with these operating systems probably weren't designed to cache this much RAM, so adding more RAM than the motherboard supports will actually cause a LOSS in performance. 128MB seems to be the sweet spot for Windows 95 and NT 4.0, as I run on my legacy systems, and 256-512MB would probably be the sweet spot for Windows 98/ME, for all of recent advanced software. Again, this all depends on the age of the software you are using with these systems.

Again, if you are concerned with familiarity of Windows ME vs other operating systemsa: compared to the changes in Windows Vista and later, the layout of Windows 95 through Windows XP are pretty much identical, except that the NT-based variants (NT 3.x and 4.x, 2000, and XP) are not built on MS-DOS, and they contain more administrative tools.

Older versions of Windows can be found on eBay for relatively little cost. In this economy you may be looking to be frugal; just letting you know of this option.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like it'a already configured to run with 1 GiB of RAM, but here's some relevant articles just in case:
"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed
Computer May Reboot Continuously with More Than 1.5 GB of RAM

I've not done a dual boot with Ubuntu and Win9x. I'd assume removing Ubuntu would be pretty much the same as with any other version of Windows, removing the boot loader (usually Grub) and restoring the Windows boot loader.
(Assuming Ubuntu is installed in it's on partition and you are not using Wubi. If you are using Wubi, check it's documentation for how to uninstall.)

Should be as simple as booting with a WinME startup floppy and typing these two commands:
fdisk /MBR
SYS C:

Then delete the Ubuntu partition using fdisk.

Thanks, for all the help. I managed to delete Ubuntu and he has ME. I know, I know, he is going to try it and see how it works. If not he will buy a new computer that has Windows 7 on it. But he will have to get by using this one until then. I can pull out one stick of memory and leave him with 512 MB of memory and maybe he can get by with that. Again thanks
