Question Solved: need boot disk
I have an older computer with a Windows 98 OS. It keeps asking for my Windows boot disk. I do not have any disks for this computer, is it possible to get a boot disk, if yes, where/how? Please help. msk

A mirror is just another site that has the same file. You can download the same thing in two places. That's it.

Is it asking for a Windows Boot disk, or for the Windows 98 CD?
I don't remember Win98 ever asking for a boot disk, but it will ask for the Windows 98 CD to install components. If you make any changes in the Network Properties, it will ask for the CD for example.
You can't download the Windows 98 CD, and a boot disk won't help if it's asking for the CD.

You may have the files fromthe CD on your system. Windows\Options\Cabs was a common location. Search the system for Win98*.cab files. If you find a folder with 45-55 of them, you can just point to that folder when it asks for the CD.

Thank you so much. Dumb question-does it matter if I safe it to a cd?
Are there any step by step instructions on what I have to do for installation or is it pretty much straight forward?

Yes, it does matter. The files for creating bootable CDs are different from those used to create bootable floppies.

I just re-read your original post, and a boot disk isn't going to resolve the issue. You would still need a Windows 98 disk to install the actual operating system.

Thank you so much for all of your help. I was thinking that I would need a Windows 98 disk...I guess I was right.

no boot disk
The computer is in my husbands shop, he uses it for restoring cars. From what he told me, he tried to shut it down by clicking on an icon. Now it comes up with a black screen that asks for the 'boot disk'???

A boot disk can't repair or even boot a computer into Windows. It would only boot to an installation environment. We might be able to provide more information on the problem if you could provide the exact error message. My guess is the operating system is corrupted, and Windows won't boot,so it's prompting for some type of boot disk. You'd still need a Windows 98 installation disk to fix the problem.

The boot disk you can download from www.bootdisk.com might be able to fix the system, as it does have some tools for checking the disk and re-writing the key files used to boot the drive, but we need the exact error message to know what the problem is. It could be something as simple as the data cable to the drive came loose and no boot disk is needed.
