and been to dell web site...where there is every driver except....sound drivers!

Found this post by fschlatter dated 16-Mar-2007 from a thread titled Crystal WDM Audio problem. Driver Guide redirects you to Blitware.com. Don't know if the downloads from the site are free?

no sound
I had the same problem with a Dell Latitude CPi D266XT running Windows 2000. The problem is the driver for the Crystal WDM Audio Codec. Download Crystal_WDM_Audio_CodecXPSetup .zip from Drivers Guide.
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=86338
Extract the files and run the exe file. Open the device manager and uninstall the Crystal WDM Audio Codec. Reboot and you should have sound. This also works for Windows XP.
