Question Old dos program on new os
HI THERE
WE USE AN VERY OLD DOS PROGRAM TO DO ACCOUNTING. ITS ON A OLD PC WITH WIN 95 AND WE REMOTELY CONNECTED TO THIS PC. NOW WE TAKE SOME FILES FROM THE PROGRAM AND COPY TO OTHER PC'S TO LINK THE PROGRAM AND RUN FROM THE WIN 95 SERVER. I HAVE 4 PC'S WITH WIN XP AND RUNS THE PROGRAM SMOOTH. I JUST GOT A LAPTOP WITH WIN VISTA AND WANT TO DO THE SAME. EVERYTHING WORKS AND THE PROGRAM RUNS BUT SOME OF THE DATA IT SEEMS TO LEAVE OUT. I HAVE CHECKED CONNECTIONS AND EVERYTHING AND THE OTHER PC'S HAVE NO PROBLEM. IT ONLY PICK SOME FILE AND SO I MOVE THAT ON THE SERVER AND RUN PROGRAM FROM LAPTOP AGAIN THE IT DOESN'T PICK UP THE FILES MOVED OR THE OTHER FILES I WANT IT TO PICK UP. SO I MOVE THE FILES BACK TO PACE EXACTLY AND RUN PROGRAM AFAIN THE IT PICKS UP THE SAME FILES. THE FILES IT HAVE TO PICK UP IS IN FOLDERS AND ALL LOOK THE SAME. SO THIS IS A BAD ONE AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIX. PLUS THE PROGRAM ONLY OPEN IN WINDOWED AND CAN NOT GO FULLSCREEN MODE. HAVE CHANGED THE PROPERTIES TO FULL SCREEN AND DID EVERYTHING EXACTLY AS I HAVE DONE THE OTHER PC'S ON XP OS. PLEASE HELP IF YOU CAN UNDERSTAND THIS MUMBLE JUMBLE.

THANX WILMOND

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Do you know the name of the accounting program that you're trying to run?

I have an idea on what is happening, as we had a similar issue on a computer at my previous company. It was a Windows 3 program, and trying to get it onto XP was hell, but we did it in the end.

Are you moving the exact same files from the Windows 95 to Vista, that you're currently doing from 95 to XP? I assume you are, but just want to confirm

Regards

eddie

Did you try right clicking the program, clicking properties, click compatibility, then changing it to run the program like if it was on a win95?

You can download a free Microsoft program called Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 to run on Vista, that emulates Windows XP.

It allows you to load Win XP into a Virtual Machine (VM): it's like running a program in a DOS box, except you're running a whole operating system in the VM "box". It's great!

Get it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Virtual PC 2007 runs on:
Windows Vista Business; Windows Vista Enterprise; Windows Vista Ultimate; Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition; Windows Server 2003, Standard x64 Edition; Windows XP Professional; Windows XP Professional x64 Edition; or Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

Warning: No USB support!
The only big drawback with running the program 'Microsoft Virtual PC 2007' is that you can't use USB connections with it. So I guess it depends on what your network hardware is as to whether this is a good solution for you.

If you absolutely MUST have USB support, buy the rival product VMWare WS6 which *does* have USB support under Vista, though unlike 'Microsoft Virtual PC 2007' it's NOT a free program.
