win98 disable the Wndows key, how?
Hi All,

I accidentally hit the "Windows" key this afternoon and it sent a 4500lb CNC milling machine crazy. Expensive result.

Any suggestions on disabling both left and right Windows keys for win98?

I can do it easily in w2000 and later with the Scancodes but they did not exist in the same Registry format in win98.

Thanks

Dave

The program WinKey Killer v1.7 (a Windows 95 program) might work on Windows 98 -

Otherwise, you might buy a USB keyboard of a known defective type! I'm not kidding!!

In Windows 98SE, certain keyboards cannot be recognised properly by USB, and one significant effect of the fault is that the Windows keys do not function. This might be specific to certain types of motherboard, so it is a trial-and-error suggestion.

This effect might be replicated on a non-faulty system by editing the SYSTEM.INI file in C:\WINDOWS and entering a wrong value for the keyboard driver file.

Thanks Ed,

I will try the win key killer on another w98 machine. That download link said "win9x" so it may work for '98.

In the interim, I popped the cap off the key then cut off the switch-post with dykes. I then sealed it all off with hot melt glue. Those win-keys ain't messing with me any more. LOL

This computer does not have any USB ports on the mobo and I'd have to get a PCI card to do the second suggestion.

Sorry, I couldn't try it out on 98. I think it will run on WinME but I'm not 100% certain with regard to 98 or 98SE.
