aspnet
I was trying to get a wireless connection and clicked on the load with aspnet. A BIG MISTAKE! Now when I boot the computer I get a screen that says User name=aspnet then it asks for a password which I didn't set. I cannot boot into safe mode either the same screen comes up. Does anyone know what I should do now?? Thanks

I think I may have gotten lucky. I remember that this computer also has Windows ME and I was able to boot to that operating system. How do I fix what I did on the windows 2000 pro. This is getting confusing. Should I have uninstalled windows 2000? The hard drive on this thing is pretty small. Will I loose anything such as documents and pictures? Thanks again

Boot into Win2K. When the logon screen appears, delete the aspnet name and type your user name. Type your password if you had one, if not leave the password box blank.

If not sure of the user name, try Administrator or Owner.

If neither of those work, and the Win2K drive is formatted FAT32, you can see it with WinME. Look under the Documents and Settings folder to check for other possible user names.
These two system folders should be present:
All Users
Default User

Any others would be user accounts; the user name almost always matches the folder name.

Thanks for responding. When I load windows ME and click on settings, then control panel then users- a box comes up and asks me to create a new user. I don't see where any users are listed.

Look in Windows Explorer/My Computer, not in Control Panel.

Look on the hard drive on the Win2K partition for the X:\Documents and Settings folder, where X: is the drive letter of the Windows 2000 partition as seen from WinME. This is where the profile folder for the users are located on the hard drive. The folder name is almost always the same as the User Name you use to sign in with.

If the Win2k drive is formatted with the NTFS file system, you won't be able to see it.

Thanks for trying to help me but I am getting nowhere. If I reinstall windows 2000 pro will that get rid of the login problem? But will I loose my pictures and documents on the windows 2000 side? Or would a repair fix the problem? Can I find the personal files when I load Windows ME? If so where do I look?
I have searched and searched for the aspnet problem but really find nothing that helps. I can't believe I am the only one with this strange problem but it has caused disaster. Thanks for helping me though.

Just to make sure we haven't missed something:
You've tried replacing aspnet with both Administrator and Owner as usernames with and without your password, and it tells you the user name or password is incorrect.
You haven't remembered your Windows User Name (this is usually shown on the Start Menu, 2nd item from the bottom, Log off <username>.... Try to picture the Start Menu, see if that jogs your memory.
You can't see the Win2k partition from WinME, so that means it's formatted NTFS. So you can't look in the Documents and Settings folder to see what users exist.
The Recovery Console needs the Administrator Password, and won't let you look in the Documents and Settings folder anyway.

A repair install shouldn't delete your files, but best to back them up just in case.
You can use a Ubuntu disk for that. This would also let you look in the C:\Documents and Settings folder to see what User Accounts exist.

Use Ubuntu Live CD to Backup Files from Your Dead Windows Computer

Thanks so much for your help. I now am able to log in although I still have the word aspnet in the login box. I remove and type in my user name and click ok and wa la I am logged in. I have uninstalled Microsoft net framework and there is no user that I find anywhere that is aspnet but at least I am able to use my computer. Thanks for your help
