can I upgrade to flatscreen?
Help! My mother has an older computer with the specs listed below. Can I just buy a flatscreen monitor and plug it in....or do we need to upgrade software/hardware/cards?

As long as it has the appropriate port, plugging in an LCD monitor should be fine.

THe port would be VGA, #13 on page 50 of the Owner's Manual.
The chipset supports a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels with 32-bit color at 75 Hz on it's analog port.

If you are thinking of a flat panel TV/HDTV that can be used as a monitor, be sure to check the the specs, some may not support high resolutions over a VGA connection, only over a digital one (DVI or HDMI), and may be limited to only 1024x768 pixels via the VGA port.

Shouldn't be a problem with a monitor though.
