You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
Yes. It's possible in this version of Windows to repartition your hard disk by using the Shrink feature in Disk Management. You can shrink an existing partition or volume to create unallocated disk space, from which you can create a new partition or volume. (Often, the terms partition and volume are used interchangeably.)

Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management.* If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

In the Navigation pane, under Storage, click Disk Management.

Right-click the volume you want to shrink, and then click Shrink Volume.

Follow the instructions on your screen

Hi there.

Browser - Firefox. When I click on some things in a browser, all windows does is it kinda 'blinks' and ignores the request.

Kinda like refreshes the screen. Sometimes I have to click two or three times.

This may be related, but it suddenly stopped seeing my mic. I tried using messenger to talk to my wife and kid in France and they couldn't hear me. I tried to set up the mic and it said there wasn't one at all.

It used to work fine, but I went in and changed some stuff and now the speakers and the mic don't work.

Related or separate? The speakers is my own dumb fault but the mic?

New to Win7. This is the first time I have tried to use it and I'm having a problem with Task Scheduler.

I went into Task Scheduler.
I clicked Action> Create Task
I filled in all the necessary information (as I understood it).
I can't find anything that says my task is set to run.
I can't find my task listed anywhere so I can recheck its properties.

So, figuring my task didn't "take", I attempted to do it again.
I clicked Action> Create Basic Task
I filled in all the necessary information, as I understood it.
The system said it could not create the task because a task with that name already exists.

So, where is it?
How can I check its properties?

Ok, this is a weird question, I know, but I don't know exactly how to Google this to find the answer.

I have a 1.5 tb external drive (which shows up as something like 1.3 tb in Windows). I use it for storage, but now I have it set up to automatically back up my internal drive. Now it shows up as 1.04 tb in "My Computer." I looked in "Disk Management" and it seems to have three partitions, two of which have no drive letters assigned. So, I just have one quick question, is that normal?

The reason I ask is because today I was messing around with dual-booting Ubuntu. I just wanted to make sure I didn't mess something up.

To anyone who answers, thanks for putting up with a stupid question, lol.

I see a few possible issues. The dumps appear to be caused by some sort of Disk corruption, but I'm actually suspecting some software instead.

First, Norton must be removed. It is known to cause crashes on Windows 7 and Vista. Here is the removal tool: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Replace it with the free Microsoft Security Essentials: www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Second, Daemon Tools should be removed. It uses a driver, SPTD.sys, that is famous for causing BSODs, Once that program is removed, run this tool to completely remove SPTD: http://www.duplexsecure.com/en/downloads

Please report back with the results, and we can move on from there.

Help!!
PC crashed, was using Windows XP and Excel 2007. PC techs installed Windows 7 and still have Excel 2007. I'm trying to install the Add-In tab with the data transfer (CWBTFXLA.XLL). Getting an error after I close out excel and open a new window. The error is saying the file is in a different format than specified by the file extension...blah blah. I go ahead and open it and it brings up a bunch of garbage in the spreadsheet. On the top line it says, "This program cannot be run in DOS mode."

1) Where's my Add-in tab?
2) Anyone else have this error and what to do?

Thanks for your time and help!!

I work for the government, Windows 7 is approved for testing use right now but they are worried about virtual XP.
We do a lot of remediation (checking for venerabilities in the OS) and they are concerned that the software we use to re-mediate and scan(Retina) will pick up the Windows XP OS in Windows 7 because of XP mode.
I tried to articulate my point, but had no data to back it up. Windows XP mode isnt a full OS as in it takes a portion of your hard drive to use for registry and installation programs like VMware. Rather the virtualization portion emlulates only what is needed for that particular program to run, its not a full OS that would take up a portion of the HDD and would be picked up on a scan.
Can anyone answer this? If so let me know where to find that info so I can prove my point.

Your profile notes Win XP. Is that still accurate? If not, which version of Windows? home, home premium, pro, etc? 32 or 64 bit

If XP, open "my computer"; open C: drive; open "Windows". Open "system32" Open drivers. Open "etc"

For location of your computer's mini dump files, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263 .

Copy the 3 most recent to a folder.
THEN, right click said folder. Left click "send to". Send to "compressed folder. That will create a .zip folder.

Return here. Use "go advanced". Manage attachments.
Browse to .zip. Upload. 1 of us will analyze them.

For an explanation of BSODs see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Screen_of_Death

When did the computer last work well? What changed?

Are you familiar with this?
I still would've liked the system to pick all this up itself....

Okay, i didn't expect this to be so soon, but i have found the source of the problem. Fortunately for those of you reading this, i have also found the solution. I have had a wireless mouse for a while, though i rarely use it. Recently, i have begun using it again. However, i have been leaving the wireless adapter plugged into the USB port. As i looked into the device manager and explored the properties of the mouse, i found that it had the capability to wake the computer. Now that i have disabled it from waking my computer, the problem has stopped.

To those of you with the same problem, there is the solution.
