hello tech heads,

I have a 32MB graphics card and i want to upgrade because i would like to play some games on my pc.
i have been looking at some cards that would be good for me, then i thought "how do i know if this will work in my pc".
my question is "how do i know what cards are compatible with my system?".
on CPU-Z it says that the maximum transfer rate is 4x, does that mean the card that i buy has to be 4x or can it also be 8x.
any advice you guys have on buying a new graphics card would be great.

Hello everyone!

I'm making this thread to see if anyone has any insight in to why my comp keeps crashing when I'm not using it!

It started nearly a month ago when I was starting out on Aion, my comp kept 'chopping' and freezing completely and I thought that I may be running the specs a little high even though I was getting around 50-60fps. Then all of a sudden my comp crashed and I can't remember if it had a BSoD or not but I think it did. Anyway when I booted it back up it said "disk read error, press ctrl alt delete to restart.' I turned it off and tried it again in an hour or so and it worked fine without even running a repair just asking if I wanted to boot in safe mode etc.

About a week past and I was watching a DVD on my xbox and my comp was running idle in the background and it did it again, this time I didn't see a BSoD because I only heard it go off. SAme thing happened when I boot my PC a few minutes later.

The other morning it did it again and I just turned it off and I booted it up 30 minutes later and it worked fine.

However, tonight it went off (again when idle) and didn't come back on right away. It first just stayed on the first 'ACER' screen for ages, and I had to select boot options after restarting for it to boot up. After a few attempts to boot up it wouldn't work, screen went black, windows vista loaded for 10 minutes and repair wouldn't come up.

Eventually repair came up and said something about taking an hour to fix and I just played my xbox sat in front and 10 minutes later it rebooted normally!

After discussing it with my unhelpful comp enthusiast friend he either suggested it was a recent buggy install or a failing HD. My HD had failed early this year but ACER replaced it and its worked fine. This computer is only a year old from the shop and I've only put a 8800 graphics card in, the default one being weaker. After browsing the internet (ie, google) and looking at HD failure symptoms, mine don't seem to fit, no odd noises or dodgey file saving.

Anyone got any ideas of what it might be and how to fix it! I'm kinda panicking I have important files and need to do work so I want my PC!

Thanks in advance, Jim

Hi There

This is just a query and apologies if in the wrong forum.

I have just bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-NW20ZF/S recently with windows 7 on it. i removed mcaffee and put kaspersky 2010 suite and FM 2010 and need a quite powerful machine and the guy in the shop said this will be ok which it has, which is one of the main reasons i bought the machine.

The battery seems to take ages to charge (it is at 66% at the moment) and still has an hour and if down to 10% and takes over 2 and half to maybe 3 hrs to charge but am not sure exactly as i charge it over night when the machine is switched off. Is this normal? The battery is a 2.5 hr battery.

The battery seems to discharge quite quickly although this might be that i am using the machine and loose track of time.

i am trying "batteryBar Pro" for 30 days and it seems quite good.

Also it seems to take a wee bit longer to to load than when i first got it. Especially the VAIO GATE which takes a wee while to come up.

I have the machine connected wireless to a router and connected in a network to 2 other desktop machines (running Windows XP).

The bottom of the latop seems to get hot after an hour or 2 and wondered it that is normal,. When using it on my lap i use a book to put it on between my legs and the laptop as it is hot.

PS

I made recovery disks when i first used the machine and they are on 3 DVD-Rs. I was wondering if i used the recovery (by prerssing F10) i think during boot to reset back to factory settings will this delete the hidden partition that is used for recovery or will it just erase the c drive and leave that partition?

Cheers

I have an ESI Juli@ audio card with its driver installed. I've moved the card to another PC without uninstalling the driver, because I planned to put it back in the same computer after a few minutes. I had a problem with the other computer's audio, so I wanted to check it with another audio card.

Anyway, I put the Juli@ card back in the same computer and the computer didn't turn on properly, so I removed it and put it back and now the computer turns on OK. So I tried playing a game which worked fine before I removed the card for the first time, but there was no sound. I closed the game and launched the audio card's mixer software (part of the driver), to see if it's configured properly, but the computer crashed. Now the mixer doesn't launch at all, and my audio card doesn't appear in Windows' Device Manager. In fact, it's not even shown as an unrecognized device, which means that I can't re-install its driver.

What can I do to get my audio card to work back?

Im running Windows Vista. The original battery wouldnt hold charge and could only use while AC adaptor was plugged in. Since then I bought a non original replacement battery and the system does not recognise it. I have tried closing the UAC and downloading the BIOS off Dell Support but for some reason the battery is still not charging and the battery indicator flashes from red to green.... On start up it displays that it does not recognise the battery and to continue have to hit the f1 key. I have also tried reseating the battery but to no avail. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The Sony Vaio VGN FE21H io have seems to have has a faulty lid switch which is causing the inverter to power off the LCD baklight. If i shine a torch into the screen i can see the faint outline of the OS, Win XP. The switch is magnetic, so if i run a magnet along the top of the keyboard the display comes on for a couple of seconds.

I have opened the laptop and looked at the motherboard, the switch is built into the boad and is un-connectable. I have also tried changing the windows power settings i.e. when lid is closed to nothing, uninstalled the video card driver, to no avail. The BIOS setting are fairly meagre and don't have any options in relation to power settings.

Is there any way from Windows to prevent the laptop going into sleep mode once the lid is closed. The option on the power settings seems ideal but it doesn't seem to function properly.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I have searched the forum for an answer but nobody seems to have had this prob.
I have a sound coming through my speakers which sounds like a fast morse code type noise and this sound seems to change with the computers hard drive, eg when the hard drive speeds up the sound changes. I used to have this sound when i first had the computer at which time i was using onboard sound, but then i brought an edirol FA-66 which seemed to fix the problem but i've just brought a pair of KRK VXT4's and the sound is back!
Does anyone have any idea of what this feedback is and how it can be fixed?
Thanks in advance.
Catalyst Control Centre shows just one monitor.

I have installed drivers for both the integrated and the new card.

A friend said something about a PCI Bus conflict and that I should just get a DVI adapter and use the new card to run both screens but i'd like to try and get both cards working!

Appreciate any ideas!

Alright, so I was playing WoW earlier this morning, when randomly the mouse cut out on me, in the middle of the screen. After logging out, the mouse was still in the middle of the screen, and would not respond whatsoever. I tried replacing the batteries, and resetting the mouse, to no avail. I then tried restarting my computer, and tried other mice (non wireless), none of which worked. After hours of trial and error, I decided to try and reformat, and I am still having the same problem. No mouse, but the wireless keyboard is working fine (they're a set). All USB ports are still responsive to other devices; even reinstalled Microsoft Intellipoint... I'm at a total loss, any help would be greatly appreciated. OS is XP SP3, everything was in perfect working order until the event in question.

While running chkdsk on my back-up 750 GB HD (Seagate ST3750330AS (Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 - Hard drive - 750 GB) the computer was inadvertantly powered down. On startup, post info said SATA2 (backup) drive "not found".

Drive C and operating system worked fine after losing Drive D. I am running XP with the primary C drive being two seagate (250GB) drives in stripe array and the backup drive above as D:\. The drive spins up at power on.

The checkdisk (with repair) was based on several earlier errors related to D:\$MFT which I was hoping to solve with checkdisk. I'm thinking the interuption resulted in the loss of the ability of the bios to see the drive. I have about 400GB of backup data on the drive.

My critical data is backed up in a third location, but there is much data on the drive that would be "Very nice" to get back. As such, I am not prepared to pay much for recovery. I would like some hints as to how I might recover at least part of data. For example, can I somehow reformat (or partial reformat) and then use free file recovery software to salvage whatever i did not overwrite with the format? Is it possible to rebuild the MFT if that is the cause of my problem? If so, how do I get my system to recognize or "find" the drive in question and what software would i use?

Any suggested path forward, including software, would be appreceiated.

My friend as Dell 8400 Dimension. The Hard Drive became corrupt.
I purchased this product http://sewelldirect.com/usbtoideadap...5converter.asp

It worked. I had the entire drive and 5000 pictures (that he never backed up) on my harddrive. But I had to leave so I cancelled the data transfer from his corrupt drive to my documents (external drive).

When I went to my next job I did the same thing and had to leave again so I cancelled.

When I got home THE HARD DRIVE STOPPED SPINNING. I tried to use it as a secondary drive to make sure the USB Adapter that I purchased worked.

Bottom line. The hard drive won't spin. No matter what I do? He has a ton of pics on the hard drive.

I don't know what to do? What if I remove the chip on top of the metal case (hard drive case- Maxtor) and buy a new chip? Does that make sense. I appreciate your help in advance.

Hey all,

I've recently installed Windows 7 (32 bit) and I tried sharing my printer (which is connected to my Windows XP 32 bit PC).

Previously, I successfully did printer sharing on my Vista (32 bit) system before it got upgraded to Windows 7. However, when attempting to share the printer, I get the 0x0000000d error.

My printer
Canon IP4680 Pixma

What steps I did
On XP computer
- Right clicked on printer, clicked on "share" and gave it a name
- "Additional drivers" section has Windows XP checked. I dont see a row for Vista or Win 7

On Win 7 computer
- Clicked on "add printer"
- Saw and found my shared printer on my XP computer
- Double clicked to add printer
- Passed the "finding drivers" stage
- Reached the "finalizing installation" stage
- After about 10 seconds, the error message pops up

I have already reinstalled my Win 7 driver and updated my XP driver to the latest version (v2.20) [which can be found at http://support-sg.canon-asia.com/con...00138101.html].

I also tried the solution at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/947236 but to no avail.

Could anyone help me please?

Hello,
I'm trying to solve a problem with a laptop for a friend of mine. It is a Toshiba Satellite 2410. It had a little bit of water, very little, spilled on it one night but worked fine for hours afterward. About 5 hours later when left idle for a time the screen was frozen when my friend went back to it. He powered it down but when he restarted it it would not come back on. Nothing comes on the screen and the light on the front for the floppy/cd drive comes on and stays on however the light actually on the cd drive does not come on when booted with a boot cd in it. Once in a while when started the floppy/cd light comes on briefly then goes out and the Toshiba boot screen comes up and there is wild beeping (but this only happens once in a while, especially if let sit for a time) but nothing else happens.

I have tried taking it apart but cannot get the it apart, I think I need to remove the keyboard but can not find out how to do this.

I'm hoping this problem is fixable. Any advice would be appreciated.

I was working on a server computer that had a 20gb SCSI drive. The motherboard had IDE capabilities and the customer wanted a larger HD because they were running out of room. So we ordered a new WD 320 gb IDE drive and cloned (using Acronis True Image) the SCSI drive to the IDE drive successfully. I disconnected the SCSI drive and hooked up the IDE drive to master and when it gets to the Windows Server 2000 splash screen, I get a BSOD that says "the hard disk is inaccessible". I switched up some jumper settings and the way the cables were connected but still got the same problem. The motherboard has a Pentium 3 CPU and there is 1 gb RAM.

I apologise for the long post! I shall try to be as concise as possible, but I want to make sure I get as much information across as I can.

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me as I seem to have a problem that I simply cannot get rid of.

Recently I purchased a new computer from Zoostorm and for about a week it worked flawlessly. But for the last couple of weeks I have been experiencing continual crashes that appear to be increasing in frequency. I shall include a Dxdiag with this post, as I'm not sure what exact information is needed to diagnose this issue.

The crashes themselves seem to occur at random intervals, although most often after a few hours of continuous activity. They can occur in-game, whilst watching Youtube and I think one even happened while I had nothing running at all. If it happens in-game often the game will keep running, but my cursor will disappear. If I tab out of my game my desktop is nothing more than a black screen that constantly appears to be trying to recover itself. By that I mean the icons are sometimes visible, the toolbar flashes and can often be seen at the top of the screen and the start menu opens and closes. If it happens on Youtube the sound keeps playing but the image is stuck. Again tabbing out brings me to the blacked-out desktop.

I have searched and searched on this issue and have tried as many fixes as I think are safe for me to do without affecting my warranty. I've tried the 'powerplay' fix for my card by setting it at a constant 750MHz and turned the fan up. I've tried disabling aero on Windows as I think I once briefly saw an error message that alerted me to a 'DWM.exe application error', although the message was short-lived before the black screen covered it up, and I have tried updating all my drivers only to find they're all recent.

I'm entirely at a loss at to what to do, and beginning to get quite worried. I have searched my event logs but any errors I find seem to have occurred after the black-screen appeared and nothing untoward before then. I cannot think what I could have downloaded that could have caused this issue. The PC came with Bullguard security suite and all I have added to it is WoW before the crashes started. I also tried to repair that too in hope it was just faulty and would fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. I'd appreciate any help that can be offered.

I should also add that with each reboot I'm forced to do, more of my HD space seems to disappear. With the last crash 3GB appear to have gone missing.

Hi i need some help before dell sends me the 4th new laptop in 3 months. I got a 1550 dell laptop with vista december 08 in june 09 i got my HP photoshop C5580 all in one shortly after my hard drive went dell sends a new hard drive everything is ok a week later i install my hp printer and blue tooth 2 weeks after that the hard drive and mother board crash dell sends a tech out to fix it, still not right so dell takes it back and sends a 1655 with vista, this one works great for 2 1/2 weeks with no hp software in it, i install it, a week later i try to power on the laptop and windows loads and loads and loads power it down and back on, it does nothing but make this wierd buzzing noise, dell sends a new 1655 with vista, it works great with no hp software for 3 weeks 1 1/2 weeks after i still it, windows didn't want to start then did, the next night windows wouldn't start, system tests told me at first operating system had a corrupt file, so i put in the vista disc trying to fix it that way, that freezes at 75% then it tells me imment hard drive failure and no operating system found. They are sending another one, this time they said top laptop gaming system with windows 7, i'm happy for this. I need to figure out what is going on though, the hp printer is the only thing that matches up, other then that these are brand new laptop after new laptop crashing because i know i don't do anything else on them no downloading or anything like that, I get no error messages prior to this accuring or anything, I have secure internet and virus scanning. Please help

I'm not sure whether I'm posting this in the right forum, so I apologize if I've made a mistake. And I'm not sure whether the reason is because of the Winfast DTV1000 S either, but worth asking.

I have had Windows 7 x64 Home Premium installed for around a week now and have already experienced 3 or 4 bsods during the week. I'm thinking that it is relevant to my tv tuner card or winfast pvr2 software, because prior to the bsod, it is always and only winfast pvr2 that locks up.

The latest bsod gave me: ""IRQL less than or not equal to..." or something like that.

Previously, I had Vista x64 Ultimate for a long time and I never recieved a bsod, apart from 2 random ones when I was doing nothing. Now I get it when I happen to be running winfast pvr2.

Here is the information about the bsod from a report windows 7 gave me:

I have a Gateway 700se. The problem is my monitor cuts out and goes into power saver mode. When I start up the PC it will run fine for about 20 and then the monitor will shut off. I thought maybe the processer fan was not working and was overheating. I took off the side panel and both the Power Supply and the Processer fan are working. I left the side off and it ran close to an hour before the monitor went into power saver mode. Can anyone give me a little direction on which way to pursue this issue. Any help will greatly be appreciated.

I consider myself very tech savvy but this issue has me stumped. I had an MSI K9A2 Platinum motherboard, Phenom black edition processor, 630 watt power supply. One day, it decided to die on me. It shut down and never came back up. If I unplugged the power cord and plugged it back in the fan would give a short sign of life then nothing.
The moboard light (green) would come on but other than that there was no sign of power. I was not sure if the issue was motherboard or power supply so I went to Frys and bought a new mobo and PSU. Came home, got everything hooked up, installed Windows 7, and everything seemed fine. Power was on, comp was booting. I started installing my previous software with no issue. Then, as I was reading something online the comp shut down. No power, same sign of life as before minus the green light since there isn't one on the MSI K9A2 CF board I bought. The fan give a quick partial spin then nothing. Both PSU and board are brand new. I have tried removing my video cards, ram, drives, etc just to see if one of them was the issue. No luck. Now I'm sitting here with a very expensive paper weight not knowing why it won't power up.
I hope someone out there has an answer.
Peace to you all.

Hello all,

The Problem

My computer started getting visual distortions on screen about a month ago. by this i mean horizontal bars of colour every couple inches all over the screen. I "fixed" this by getting rid of the dust and leaving the side panel off, as i thought the GPU was overheating.
Seemed to work for a while, however at the beginning of this week it started doing it again with the added bonus of an occasional Blue Screen stating memory parity errors.
The truely wierd thing is: it will run fine for hours if not days at a time but then the next time i use it theres a near instant fault. Played MW2 yesterday for about 5 hours and it was fine. 5 mins into a game today and i get the graphic errors followed by parity error.

The Computer

This beast is getting rather old, its a Dell Dimension DIM4700, but ive upgraded it a few times. It has 2GHz of ram, a Geforce 8800 GTS 512 GPU, a 2nd dvd player and a 530W PSU.

The Suspicion

Well the graphics card, memory and power supply are less than a year old so im hoping they arent the culprit here. Im not exactly tech savvy tho so feel free to tell me its one of those and make it a cheap fix for me ;) . However i have a suspicion it might be the motherboard.

so anyone have a clue whats going on with this machine? is one part or every part faulty?

Hi Tech Support Guys.

This came to me today, while i was at work doing completetly unrelated tasks.

How do you install the operating system, or infact how do you do anything with a brand new build with NO built in graphics?

maybe this is a silly question, but i'll put it like this...

I am planning to purchase for the purpose of my first home pc build......

Gigabte MA790XT- UD4P MOBO, which has no built in graphics, I am told to install the operating system first, followed by the MOBO drivers , but don't know how you can do any of these two things, without any display, or even if you can get a bios screen, obviously the Graphics card will have to be connected to plug the monitor into it, so can anyone tell if I can get a bios screen, and install the OS.

On a side note, say this is not as problematic as I am expecting, how do you get the OS not to install all the MOBO compoonants and the graphic card before you get to use the discs provided.

for your information, this is my wishlist so far for my new pc

Gigabyte MA790XT - UD4P MOBO

AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU

ATI Raedon 4890 on the Sapphire Vapor-X Card (This is the chip BG-0 recomended plus if he remembers the discussion about noisy fans why I've opted for the Vapor-X supposed to be quiet!!)

Antec Earthwatts EA750 750w PSU

and this is all going into

Antec Three Hundred Cool & Quiet Case....BETTER BE!!

that's what is good as decided, fairly modest but reasonably powerfull, without breaking the bank!!

I stil have to decide on what Brand of DDR3 Memory I'm going to use, and..

HDD, DVD/BDROM, EXTRA FANS, CARD READER, and anything else which may have slipped my at the moment!

let me know what you think,

Cheers Keith

BG-0 just kidding about remembering the convo, you deal with loads of stuff evryday, still here a wee reminder
