Ok, now I've been reading about this error since I first discovered it on one of my older systems last night.

The only CD that I possess is the "upgrade" W2K, no recovery disks..nada. So, I'm reading that one must download these 4 "recovery" floppies, then use them to boot into the OS. How will doing this change the size of the "hive"? Will this work? Can I not do this via .iso CD? Also, is the recovery disk the same as the "boot disk" that I'm seeing in various articles?

Thank you in advance!

Thanks for your site. I've been reading your threads and they are really helpful!

For me, today was one of those days when I should never have gotten out of bed ... Started the day fine, computer started and worked well (first time I have had this one going in ages, has always been reliable though. Just a few basic application error messages on the screen, ie. file missing in Microsoft Calendar etc. Never use Calendar so just deleted the program.

Basically, my current problem (Problem No. 1) right now is that Win98Se is only operating in Safe Mode (which I have selected on Startup myself), that is, the icons on the desktop only work in Safe Mode and can't open the Start Menu either on a proper start-up.

If I allow the computer to start itself it does so fine (I might ad without the usual start up melody which also stopped during all this ~ I have an internal sound card in the PC) and the first thing that happens is I receive a box saying "New Hardware Found" PCI Multimedia HW Device" and then it goes to the Add New Hardware Wizard and asks for a new driver for it. I have tried putting in my Win98 Solution Disk but it spins in the drive but does not do any more than that!

Note: I have not added any new hardware. I added a Karaoke program when I first started up (from disk) and did plug in some external speakers for a short time but both were working fine. What did come to my attention is that my LG Cyberlink CD/DVD-RW had a file error when I tried to open it to see if it was working. I tried reinstalling the software and have since deleted it completely as I thought it was the cause of some of my other problems but now can't seem to get the software to re-instal. This is problem No. 2. I have the original disk. I thought that I needed this software to be reinstalled so that the Dell Solution Disk would work. I do actually need this to work. I am not sure that it is working or not as disks spin in there. I could test it by looking at some pics stored on CD? But the software is definately not to be found on my PC.

Note: this PC also has a CD Rom Drive but it does not open nor have any lights so I don't think it works and never use it.
I also updated Windows Media Player 9 and this originally had an error message but then worked fine when I tested it a second time. Ohh the joys of working with Win98 or is it just me???. I also experienced several "internet explorer" errors which told me they would send an error report and that I had to shut down and restart my computer.

So Im wondering if this PCI Multimedia Audio Device Driver issue is somehow affecting the operation of my PC. Or maybe the sound card? Or these other error messages?

I also have an error saying ICON.EXE missing. I have not looked into where this fits into everyting. The "Missing Shortcut" Box comes up and Windows searches and then stops. As nothing is happening I cancel this action. It wont cancel or go away so I hit control/alt/delete to see what is going on and it shows Explorer (Not Responding). There is also an unknown program doing something. Basically the computer stall at this stage and I have to keep control/alt/deleting and ending tasks but this still does not make my PC icons and Start function work again. So I end this task, Missing Shortcut Box remains on the desktop. All Icons and the Start function do not do anything if I click on them. I am going around in circles here and need some expert advice (could get in the guinness book of records for starting a PC so many times in one day trying to solve this one! If you can give me some direction, suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks Blue_J

P.S. Have also tried restoring from DOS prompt using
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe which did not work.

Have also looked in Device Manager (in Safe Mode) and LG CD/DVD is not listed anywhere.

Can't connect to net on this PC but could download files on another (preferably not zip as a bit difficult for me) and somehow open them on this one, ie. a diagnostic program. Am also worried about losing my photos as can burn to CD but may be corrupted if I use Nero in Safe Mode.

I know it is old, but the friend I am giving it to has a 20 gig hd with ME and only 254 RAM that is the max RAM he can put on the motherboad. So if I can remove Ubuntu he can have a little better computer that has 1 gig of RAM and he is familiar with ME. I am looking for my old hard drive that had XP on it before I got the new computers with Vista, but so far no luck.

I am a beginner to computer logic, but my laptop has gone down and I need it desperatly for my business and my studies. I have a Toshiba that I bought off craigslst about two weeks ago while my four-month old Acer (big mistake??) is being shipped to Texas for a motherboard replacement. Everything has been great w the Toshiba.

The Laptop has Windows 2000. I tried to download MSN Messenger to chat with my brother in the middle-east. After messenger installed and I tried to run it, it let me login then said there was an exe. error and had to shut down. I thought maybe restarting Windows was needed to finish the apps install

Well, when the laptop restarted, it went to Windows load screen, then begins to load my background and stops, saying WINLOGON.exe has generated errors and the system needs to reboot. I tried booting in safe mode, and Iget the same message. The only thing I did was try to install messenger, so Im assuming thats the issue! PLEASE HELP! I own a chocolate company and a fairly locally successfull marshmallow shop, so I am more than willing to send you a nice goodie box if you can help me out!!!

I am having some issues with my Acer Travelmate 800 Laptop. It wouldnt boot up at all, so I plugged it into the wall and tried again. It still wouldn't boot. So I took out the battery and left it plugged in and it booted. It boots and goes to the windows 2000 loading screen. Once it does that it says that I need to insert the service pack 2 disk. It says the NT5INF.CAT file is missing. SO, I downloaded service pack 2, and burnt it to a disk. I put in the disk and clicked enter and it is now asking me to type the path where the file is located. I have no idea what I need to type in there, or if I am even taking the right approach. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!

UPDATE:

I read online that I could try to recover my system by putting in a newer version of windows. So I tried installing windows XP. I get the windows blue screen to show up, it starts to load all the drivers. It says that windows is going to begin setting up and then just as it goes to the next page the laptop shutsdown completely and turns off. I have tried re doing this about 8 times. I also tried going into the bios to turn off the auto shutdown but there is a password set up. I tried phoenix, PHOENIX, CMOS, BIOS and none of those work.
Someone please help, this thing is driving me nuts.

I recently got a hand-me-down laptop from an uncle. The laptop is a Compaq Presario 1277. I had to reformat the computer from an old 98 disc lying around because the OS was inaccessible when I received it. Now, my question is: Would it be possible to upgrade this laptop to XP? I have an XP Home Edition disc...but what I want to know is if the laptop could handle it.
Laptop Specs:
AMD-K6 3D Processor
124.0 MB RAM
32-bit file system/virtual memory
If anyone else has any questions about the laptop, I should be able to answer them. If the upgrade is possible, what am I going to be able to load onto the laptop program-wise?

I have a Win2k sp4 system with little running on it. It's been running a bit slow so I looked at the task manager and found something very bizarre. The CPU usage was varying from 0-100% but it was creating a sine wave pattern on the performance map (see below). Upon checking the process list, I found that it was "system" that was doing the deed with only a small amount of memory in use. Any ideas as to what could be causing this strange pattern?

(Re-install if no choice.) I don't want to buy a disc because I should just buy a new PC for a little more but I don't have the money now.

When I installed Windows XP on my other PC I noticed it copies from the disc to a Cab Folder. I wonder if I can use a Cab folder on my 2000 PC to do an install. Or copy the Cab folder to disc and run it from there.

Hi,

When my Broadband modem is connected to the PC and when it is ready to use the internet I keep getting the error message explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program and the message disappears. The desktop flickrs for sometime and then come back.

I have scanned for Virus, infact they were around some threats, ran sfc /scannow command rebooted my PC still no go, installed Wise disk cleaner software cleaned the hard disk, installed registry Glary Register repair software repaired the registry and rebooted the PC still no go.

When I disconnect the PC from my BB modem via RJ45 cable the problem does not occur.

Can anyone look into the issue and give me a solution.

Hello
I have a computer running 98SE (can be ME if that would be significantly easier though I am terrified of the "Windows protection error. You must restart your computer" bluescreen that came up once a week without fail when I did use that OS, forcing a reinstall)
I get my internet through a wireless 802.11g lan card in pci and that internet connection I want to send through the serial port to share it (using a serial null modem cable).

I can install ICS but in the settings there is nothing to select as Internet Connection and my wireless connection appears in the home network box at the bottom of the window.

I set up a null modem in the modem setup wizard and it all seems to be a success until I click on modems and the list is empty, though it actually seems to have appeared in the device manager. I cannot select that anywhere on the ICS configuration screen.

Does anyone know how to share a wireless connection with internet over serial in 98se?

PS please dont say use ethernet because the system I am trying to get connected to the internet is an Atari Falcon, and is set up correctly to receive internet.

a friend of mine dropped a older model compaq presario off at my house for me to look at for them. im not new to computers but i have never come across this message before. when you start the computer (its a laptop, i am on my computer)it shows the windows 98 screen but then comes up "windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists."

also tells me to press any key to continue but no matter what i have pushed, it shuts its self off. i have even tried F8 to get it to come to the boot screen but it still shuts off.

i REALLY need help please & thank you.

Hi to all:) I have an old windows 98se pc which i have resserected from the spare room really just cos i like playing with things. I have reloaded the system and all seems fine but it wont recognise any usb stick that i plug in.Basically it says the driver needs updating and when i try to do that from the 98 disc it cant do it. I put the stick in the usb socket on my xp system and found its drivers in WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS.and copied and pasted them to a disc, then transferred the disc to the98 system and pasted them to the same location, but of course, it dosn't work!!!
I would appreciate any ideas anyone has to be able to get the usb drive working on the old 98 system.
Many thanks in advance.
