Sir, Just upgraded from Ubuntu 9.04 to 9.10 and back again.
9.04 detected my USB modem (E160) and printer (HP Deskjet F380) without problems, Firefox works without problem. In 9.10, modem not detected, printer missing, Firefox pages occupy half screen, tabs can't be closed except by restarting. So, back to what works!
I'm not a computer whizz, just making a living. Why can't someone in Ubuntu think up an automatic download to the software bods - just press a key on suspected problems and off it goes - probably lots like me who know nothing about poking around inside operating systems. I just want make a living - I'm not a computer engineer or software writer. Computers are a tool, not a destination!
Please help,

Hi all,

I have some tricky things I'm trying to research. A local non-profit organization I help out is offering free wireless and wants to add adult web filtering. So, I'm attempting to setup something at my house then get used to it before I take it up there.

The guys from work have informed me that the internet and Linux will be my best solutions. I'm semi-familiar with Linux, have ran Ubuntu, GOS, and PuppyLinux(hard install and pen drive) and I'm willing to learn a new operating system such as Solara(sp?) if necessary.

So I guess my question is, where should I start in my research of how to filter the internet through a computer using linksys wireless routers?

I've been googling for days and I'm "guessing" that I want to set up a Linux box and then build a DNS server and I can then somehow tell the router to go through the Linux box's DNS server to filter, is this right? Any help, tips, pointers, different ways to google this would be appreciated.

*Note: I want to use a single computer to filter all computers attached to a Linksys wireless router. I'm not looking to just setup an adult filter on a single computer.*

Thank you VERY much.

Kyle:)

Hi,
I am trying to use my pen drive which is having FAT32 file partition. But while transferring files from my linux partition(Ext3 in RHEL4) to my pen drive, I observe, all the files having names having more than 8 characters are displayed OK...but files with names less than or equal to 8 characters become transfered to all small letters....
Let me explain the problem with few examples.
Say I have a file named "CHAR8FLN" in my home folder. When I copy it my pen drive, it becomes "char8fln". But for a 9 character file "CHAR9FLNM" it comes up properly.
The same problem is observed for file names less than 8 characters and for more that 9 characers the file names remain as it is.
There is also another problem.
In my pen drive(FAT32 partition) I am not able to create two different files like "ChAr9FlNm" and "cHaR9fLnM". Even though I create the second file it seems, there is no further file created. But in my home folder the same process creates two different files.
For mounting the pen drive in RHEL4 I am using this command.

mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/PRATAP_8GB

Here is the content of the file /etc/fstab on my system. I think, the pen drive should be auto mounted as soon as I insert it. But it doesn't happen and I have to manually mount it every time.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 64-Bit on my PC. I want to learn how to use blender and I've found a lot of community documentation and video to help me learn it with expertise via simplicity. That's great, but Ubuntu is interferring!! Some of the shortcut keys for Blender are inoperable because they are shortcut keys for Ubuntu. Specifically, when I click alt to perform a view rotation of objects in blender, the entire window moves despite if I am clicking inside workable program space. So I disabled all of my shortcut keys through the preferences menu, but its still doing the same thing. Can someone help?

Two days ago I downloaded Ubuntu 9.1 onto an old laptop that my wife uses to see if it speeds things up. Everything is working fine except I can't get the wireless working. I contacted Linksys and they charged me $32.99 with a guarantee that they would get it working. They then passed me off to a partner company named Supportrix. They told me that they couldn't find a driver for the Linksys wireless card, so I should give them two days and they would have one made for me. I called back today and the best they will do is email the tech that I was talking to, to see if he would call me back.

Does anyone have a driver or can you point me in the right direction? WHile I may get satisfaction from Supportrix, I would also like to hedge my bets. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Pertinent info:
Linksys Wireless G Notebook Adapter model no. WPC54G ver 3

I have several IIS webservers that I need to parse and graph the log files for. What I am going to do is send all of the IIS log files to a Windows server and once a day have those files be uploaded to a Ubuntu Linux server I have set up. I need a software package to take those IIS files and parse them and put the information on a webpage setup in Apache. I would like the webpage to have links to each website's information from the files. From there I will create a script to compress the files and move them off the server to an archive type database.
Anyone do this before?

For weeks (has it been months now?) I have been suffering a fairly well-specked core duo with a gig of RAM running Ubuntu 8.04, which over a couple of hours after a reboot, gets slower and more congested requiring frequent re-boots. This is especially noticable in Firefox, whereas Opera and Ephiphany don't seem to suffer so much. Fortunately this machine is in another city and only gets used a few days a month.

So to see if I could do a quick fix, I decided to install 9.10 and was very favourably impressed with the new installer, especially the partitioner, which sems vastly improved over 8.04. It offered a (new to me) option to install 9.10 alongside my existing, which my knee jerk reaction to was, "That's good, If I don't like it, I'll just uninstall it and then try to figure out what's wrong with 8.04"

Unfortunately (probably) I did not think through where the installer was going to get the space, and when I brought it up, it had not found my old /home partition, and about that time it was necessary to depart to return here leaving me unsure of what had happened and now unable to investigate until I get back there.

So here is the first question. What have I done partition-wise (the 8.04 had a swap, system, and home partition; big hdd with lots of room most of which is/was devoted to /home)? I am guessing that 9.10 took the space it needed from /home, and I hope that it took "unused" space. Any ideas?

(I expect that this question might be commented by any linux user, not just Ubuntu users.)

This is going to be a theoretical discussion because I cannot access the other computer from here. But more than theory, because I really want to see what the rest of 9.10 looks like, and am about 98% sure that I want to upgrade this computer as well.

It also has the swap, system, and home partitions the difference being that this computer has another 300 gigs in an unused partition. So the second question is: when I install 9.10 would you recommend that I upgrade over 8.04, or just do a clean install into the existing system partition, or do another "alongside" utilizing part of the unused partition? I like the idea of installing it alongside 8.04 but want to make sure that it sees my existing home partition. Is this just a matter of mounting home in the 9.10?

I want the result to keep my desktop intact with all of the quick launches at the top as they are now.

Thanks in advance.

I'm trying to make a USB ubuntu flash drive from ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I use the option in administration to try this. But I get an error while copying files to the flash drive. My source is a CD with an ubuntu iso file downloaded from ubuntu. But this file appears to me to be an installation file and not a live CD file. I've looked at www.pendrivelinux.com to get a live ubuntu file in the live CDs list but it appears that's not what I'm getting. This is where I got the link to download the live ubuntu file: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/live-cd-repository/

What do I need to do differently to get this to work?
Please see attached images for error code. Th other image is the contents of the 4gb flash drive when copying to it is halted.
I am installing Ubuntu 9.10. I am dual-booting with XP and do not want to overwrite the MBR on my first hard drive.

In the past when I have dual- or multibooted with Ubuntu or other Linux distros, I have been able to place grub on a floppy (fd0). I know Ubuntu 9.10 has gone to Grub 2, but it should still be possible to write to the floppy instead of the hard disks.

But during install, when I reached the point in the quote above, the drop-down list does not include the floppy drive as an option. In the past (as with Ubuntu 9.05) I have merely overwritten the default "(hd0)" with "(fd0)." I tried that while installing 9.10 and received the fatal error that Grub could not be written to the device.

To be sure, I formatted the floppy and ran chkdsk on it with no errors.

Having grub on the floppy is much more convenient. You simply insert the floppy and you can dual- or multiboot. Eject it, and your system is a normal, single-boot machine again.

Can anyone help?

Update:

Now I've obtained the instructions for making a boot CD to boot the USB for a computer that can't boot from a USB. Here: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/make-a-...r-ubuntu-9-10/
But the last step is to burn the cd image. But the instructions say to use a live CD to make this usb boot cd and I only have one CD drive. Can I follow this procedure in the link above using my installed ubuntu?

Update:
I got the USB ubuntu drive made. Now I just need to contact my computer tech support to change the BIOS to boot from a USB flash drive.

Update: The post below is my progress on this problem.
http://forums.techguy.org/linux-unix...usb-flash.html

Hi, I'm new to linux and I've got ubuntu 9.10 installed on my only HD along with windows home xp sp3. I'm impressed with ubuntu. I want to run it from a flash drive so I don't use my hard drive. Also I don't know the difference between xubuntu and kubuntu and ubuntu. 0) Briefly, what is the difference? I followed instructions to make a knoppix bootable USB flash drive prior to finding ubuntu. Here is the link to the procedure I did to make the knoppix bootable USB flash drive: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-knoppix-510/

The USB flash drive is not recognized on boot even though I changed the boot order to "removable" for the first boot priority. I have some questions: 1)Is my BIOS incapable of booting from a USB flash drive since I had no option in BIOS except "removable" that didn't work that seemed to be what I needed to have to boot from a flash drive? 2) Is xubuntu the version I need to run from the flash drive instead of ubuntu? 3) Do I need a flash drive faster than 30 MB/sec to feasibly run the ubuntu O/S from the flash drive such as a 200x or 480 MB/Sec flash drive? 4)How many MB/Sec is 200x speed on a flash drive?
I could not locate a flash drive with good reviews such as the OCZ Rally 2 Turbo 4GB or the Lexar Vault 4GB. I checked newegg and tigerdirect and CDW. 5) Do you know where I could buy one of these flash drives online or a comparable one?

6) Is there a topic here I'm overlooking for my goal of running the ubuntu O/S from a flash drive?

My Questions from above:

0) Briefly, what is the difference between xubuntu and ubuntu and kubuntu?
1) Is my BIOS incapable of booting from a USB flash drive since I had no option in BIOS except "removable" that didn't work that resembled what I needed to have to boot from a flash drive?

I just recently moved and before the move the computer worked just fine. After the move I have plugged everything in and nothing. The pc powers up like its running etc but the monitor remains black with the yellow indicator light constant. I know its not the monitor because when I first plugged it in I got the screen that says its not receiving a signal from the pc (the pc wasn't turned at the time). So I thought maybe I'll download Kubuntu 9.10 (since i'm running 9.04) and see if that will get the screen going.... So I have download 9.10 (kubuntu of course) and popped it into the cd and still hasn't done anything. Let me take you through a step-by-step of what it does do.

From it already being on (the pc):
1. Press the cd eject button
2. Pop the 9.10 cd in
3. Hold the power button on the pc to turn it off
4. Wait 10 seconds then turn it back on

(This I thought was odd)

5. It turns on then after like 5 seconds shuts off (clicks and light on pc goes off) then about
3-5 seconds after that it turns back on and the light on the cd player blinks like it is
reading the cd.

During this whole process the monitor remains black and the indicator is a constant yellow. I have checked to see if its my connections to the pc itself and everything is snuggly connected.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,

Trying to install Ubuntu 8.04 onto my home PC with Windows XP on it. It comes to a screen that says, "Type 'Enter'." Then it says, "Type 'proceed' to install Ubuntu". Or something like that, it loads everything and then it just stops. Any ideas on how to actually install it? Also, it pops the DVD drive and disk out even when nothing's happening. It also says on the screen that it's a Dell System Restore DVD. Is this the actual DVD to install Ubuntu or no?

I've looked on the installed program list but can't find it and don't know how I can uninstall / reinstall it.

So this December I'm clean-installing 64-bit Windows 7 on my laptop. It's got 7RC 32-bit on it right now.

However, my laptop's not really the best, just a $400 one I picked up at Micro Center to have a computer-away-from-my-PC computer, so I want to install linux (probably ubuntu or kubuntu, but that's not what I'm asking about) on it too and dual-boot it.

Reason being, one, I want to learn a little about this, and two, Win7 can be my "heavy" OS, used when I want to play some older games or do something specific to Windows, and Ubuntu can be my "light" OS, which I'll boot when I just want to idly surf the web or IM or something like that. I've no experience with doing this and only very limited experience with linux at all; so far I like kubuntu's feel more but I'm fine with either.

So, two questions. First is, how easy is this to do, what's the best way to go about it? I know what a partition is, but I don't know the safest/best way to go about making one.

Second, is there any way to let both OSes access certain folders and files (such as my pictures and music), or would I have to have copies of each file for each OS?

I'm not a newbie to computers, have screwed around enough with linux to at least be able to open a web browser or Pidgin without breaking something, but I am new to dual-booting and such. My laptop's specs are posted under my PC's.

The point of this, partly, is to learn how to do it, and to actually use linux outside of virtualbox or something. Meaning, I'd prefer a method that won't turn my laptop into a $450 brick if I mess up since I'm new at dual-booting and installing Linux, but I don't mind something just for being a little technical.

I read somewhere else that it could be bad ram, so checked it with one out and one in and then vice versa... I dont know what to do... I need this bad, and one little last note to add Ubuntu will not run either. It just loads and loads and loads... I dont know if this has anything to do about this...
