It tends to happen if I walk away for a while, but also can happen while importing in iTunes.
I thought at first it was the mouse freezing, but it moves around OK, and if the activity monitor is open then it freezes up too, so it seems to be the whole machine or the screen.
Would anyone know if ram be the cause? Or some problem in Bios?
thanks

i just recently purchased an iPod Touch g1 on ebay. it was in great condition and eventually powered up just fine. (it was in 'super-dead mode') it came-to, and i got a password screen!

It says i need to put the password in, even if the ipod is off i doesnt work, i just want to restore it. i took it to the local mac store (sort of a miniature mac store), and he tried restoring it in DFU mode, but it didn't work. the nearest mac store that will reflash it is a two and a half hour drive away, and i'm definitely not buying the gas to go that far.

is there a hack or something i can download or get the link to so i can reflash it myself?

I just received this scanner from Topbuy.com.au

The product specs on their site for this scanner read:

Win 98 (driver provided), Win ME, Win 2000, Win XP, Vista 32 / 64 or MAC 10.4

There is no Mac driver included, only a PC disc.

I found the Tech Support Guy site by searching Google for "Otek+scanner+Mac+driver".

There are 4 pages of a thread that is now closed about lots of people that bought various versions of this scanner and had trouble making them work with Windows PCs!

In the thread was the email address for the manufacturer in Taipei, tech-support@eu3c.com. I emailed them immediately and was pleased to get a reply in minutes, but not good news...

"We are sorry that we don’t have Mac driver. If the model you purchased is our FilmScan35-I, it doesn’t support Mac though."

Before I contact TopBuy and arrange to return it, has anyone got one of these to work with a Mac?

If not... buyers beware. You will find this scanner, and a number of its variants, on EBay, TopBuy and other places that say they support Mac in the specs.

Thanks.

I have recently received a brand new Mac and am attempting to use Ichat. The issue is that as soon as I type in my password and press enter to log in, it opens the password window again.

The HP 1020 laser jet supposedly was never built for Mac support. But I was using it in Leopard with the driver for the 1022, When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, it quit working. I entered/deleted files and entire folders i in following several online "workarounds" to get the 1020 working again, but to no avail.

NOW, the Photosmart 5180, which WAS being recognized in Snow Leopard , is not. It appears in the System preferences Printer&Fax screen, and it shows that it already has a printing queue, but when I try to print a document, the printer screen pops up shwoing "no printer selected."
have repeatedly added the printer through the Print and Fax pref window, reset the printing system, and downloaded and installed the new, updated Snow Leopard drivers. I have also repaired the disk, and repaired the disk permissions.

Despite all this, the printer appears it Print and Fax prefence window, but will not allow me to add it so I can print a document.

Anything I can do short of re-installing OS X?

Thanks.

Not sure if this is a place where I can ask a question related to iphone issues, but it has become a pc issue. Long story shorter....went to mac for a draining battery, was told it needed to be reprogrammed with new software because a bug was making the phone not really be in standby when it was supposed to = draining battery. I had synced the night before, so no problem...At the store the genius bar guy specifically said, when syncoing with computer first time, start as new iphone, don't restore old data -- point being, that restoring old data might restore the problem draining the battery in the first place.

So, went home, did as I was bade, and promptly sacrificed the bulk of my calendar and all of my iphone pix (4 yo's birthday photos, etc...) to computer heaven. I figure this stuff must exist in some form somewhere in my laptop...any ideas how to find it and retrieve it?

Most grateful....

I am in a class with a friend who has a MAC laptop. I have a DELL w/ WIN XP-PRO.
We are attending a class where the instructor gave each of us a free flash drive with all of his instructional material on it. I hope I'm posting in the right forum, if not please let me know.
The Flash contains mostly Power Point files -- all of those look like they're *.ppt filetypes.
There are a few *.doc files from MS Word -- many of those are key educational material.
The other key files are PDF, some *exe and *.dll.
I know she can read the PDFs, so that's not a problem. As for the *.exe and *.dll files, they are required for some interface tools for training. Haven't tried them yet, so no prob yet. She and all my classmates have the same flash drive.

Our concern is what can I do to help her see these *.ppt files and *doc, files. Do I have to convert them to something else? Can I do that "globally" or one file at a time? Does she have to install something new? We really don't know what to do about this and the presentor didn't have a clue either. :(

I am going crazy here! I can connect to the internet just fine but my p2p program (Transmission) and iChat and even Urban Terror doesn't work any more. I have been struggling to get a port forwarded to Transmission and must have done something that screwed anything up but I can't figure out what it is. I am OSX 10.5.8 and have done all the recent updates. I played around with my configuration settings through T_Com's web page and also some stuff through Mac but thought I changed everything back. Does this has to do with the DNS server? I am so lost and hop someone can help me. Thanks so much in advance. I apologize if I am leaving out some obviously relevant information.

Ah yeah the title says it all. I'm a windows user love the look of Windows 7 but can't make the choose between it and MAC OS X Snow Leopard because I'm looking at upgrading in late January 2010 when I should be able to afford whatever I want and if not Jan definitely June.

Here's what I want to do.
play games
have a computer I can press the power button and count to 5 or 10 and be able to run everything I want straight up. and definitely NO WAITING
edit pictures do some fairly basic audio recording
music editing
browse the net
and have a desktop that 'works'

MAC OS X owns the last point but it's the other ones that will through the balance of power. So I call on the powers that be to answer the conundrum that many pc users are facing I'm sure.
Especially when I will want to virtualize windows something to run my old programs without having to by a completely knew set of programs.

Over to you Mr. Brown.

  Native Command Queuing: Yes ......

QUESTION 1. Does the above mean that this drive only has 298 GB? On the box it says: "1TB/To" which the salesman said meant "1 terabyte." And, the Time Machine window where it is now backing up my hard drive says, "899 MB of 930 MB, which I guess would imply a terabyte. Is Thailand playing games with me? How big is my drive really?"

SECOND QUESTION: I started doing the Time Machine backup yesterday afternoon. It backed up all night and presently it's afternoon again, and only 28 GB of 46 GB have been backed up according to the window--and the progress bar agrees. It's still working.
Perhaps the error is mine. I used one of the USB ports on the side of the keyboard. Are these (abominably) slower than the USB's on the back of the machine?
Thanks! tom

basically, what i've done (short of going to the apple store, which i will do when i get the time) is restore to both 3.1.1 and 3.1.2. i've tried almost everything, from restoring (as i mentioned before) to running a fridge magnet over the back... strange.

I'm having some (intermittent) trouble connecting to the internet with my laptop which runs wirelessly. Even if the internet is working properly, (as proven by the fact that my old PC desktop is still connected) sometimes my laptop won't connect. My airport icon in the top right corner of my screen may show full connectivity, but neither FF3 nor Safari will connect. I've tried this:

System Preferences-->Network-->Location: Airport, Show: System Status-->Assist Me-->Diagnostics = That runs the scan, tells me that "it appears to be connected, but may be a problem with the internet service" or something along those lines (even if the desktop is connected just fine)...right now it's working, so I can't remember the EXACT phrasiology, but it's very similar to that, and the lights which were green before the scan turn to red. I want to figure out what I need to do, so that it doesn't suddenly decide it doesn't want to work in the middle of something important.

I'm becoming concerned that my airport card is about ready to bite the dust, but I'm pretty much hardware illiterate, so I might be way off base. If you have any ideas/input, I'd love to hear it! Thank you so much!! :)

I have a corrupted iPhoto Library file. When I try to open iPhoto it crashes. If I move the Library and start a new one, it works. In another account it will open and bring up photos from Nov. 2008 and before.

The problem began when I downloaded iMac upgrades in August. I have photos from June 2009 to now as I bought a new camera and the photos downloaded right into Pictures, not iPhoto. But I have lost all pictures from Dec. 2008 to the end of May 2009. Is there anyway to open a file and pull individual pictures out. There used to be a program in the old Mac days that would let you dig into files and take some out. (It had a Jack-in-the-Box for an icon). Are there any programs that would let me open the Library and take pics out?

I use my bootcamp Windows 7 on my Macbook to transfer files from the Mac partition onto my NTFS Seagate freeagent external HD.

I transferred a 7.2GB 1080p movie from my mac partition onto my NTFS external hard drive via Windows 7 boot camp and when I try playing the video, it only shows like 55 mins of it and it is a 2 hour movie.

Also when I click properties on the freeagent, it shows it as a 6.8GB file not 7.2GB.

what is going on?

Also, I tried a game iso ( Which I have the original and made a image file") and transferred from Mac to NTFS freeagent via Windows 7 bootcamp, and when I tried mounting the image via Slysoft virtual clone drive, it says that theres a error and tells me to get a 32 bit or 64 bit version of the game... That is not the problem as I've made a image of the same game directly on my windows partition and it mounts fine... the problem occurs when I'm transfering large files (around 4gb and more) from my mac partition to my NTFS freeagent via Windows 7 bootcamp.

I don't believe that this is a problem with my external hard drive because I use it on my actual windows 7 pc and it works fine for any size file.

I am a probie when it comes to Mac trouble and troubleshooting. I have owned my iMac Graphite for 7 years without a problem except for Epson printer communication. About two weeks ago my whole system crashed in the midst of an AppleWorks 6 save. I was in OS 9 because that is the only place my printer actually works, but I was saving through the Users folder into OS X. I rebooted with the OS X startup disc and went to Disc First Aid to try to verify and repair whatever had just happened. Verify said, "invalid node structure" "the volume HD needs repair" and of course the repair option was greyed so I could not click it.
I then went to the public library and began reading about Jaguar troubleshooting in a Mac Upgrade and Repair Bible. I came upon a whole new world of programming that I didn't even know existed on my computer when I went into single user mode and ran "fsck -y" and got back the same message (invalid node structure) and more (4, 5023). So the book suggested that I run it again until I get the message that the volume had been repaired. I did, and this time I got a new message: disk Os5: 0x8 (UNDEFINED). That message repeated over and over until I finally shut the computer off.
I am very sad to see my beautiful graphite friend sitting idle now for several days and no answer in books or on the internet as to what all this means and what to do. I guess my affair with the iMac is over since all of the tech's have moved on to the new stuff.:(

Office 2008 for Mac cannot run Visual Basic macros or load add-ins that contain Visual Basic macros.
What would be the best way to adapt this program? Essentially the program accepts three numbers, coordinates of a point in 3-D space, and returns two numbers, coordinates of the point projected onto a 2-D monitor. I have all the translational and rotational equations. Without programming in C, what would be the best way to computerize the equations?

I have generated a group of vector/matrix etc. equations using
MSWord 2008 for Mac v.12.2.1 Equation Editor. The procedure I have used is:
Click where you want to insert an equation.
On the Insert menu, click Object.
In the Object type box, click Microsoft Equation, and then click OK.
Build the equation by selecting templates and symbols from the Equation toolbar and typing variables and numbers.
Basically I liked the equation editor.

I am interested in pasting these equations into a larger (1000 page) document but in their original document they show some instability. For instance lower halves of letters and symbols in an equation (and in equations below (?) it) disappear from time to time and then all of the affected equations need to be refreshed.

In short, I'm afraid to invest time putting these equations into the large document for fear they will misbehave, themselves, or they will ruin the large document with their instability.

How portable and free of hassles and dangers would my large document be with these equations in it?

Do I have options?
Thanks very much, great site!
3. Using cp -p -r I copied the backed up data directory to /usr/local/mysql/data

When trying to start mysql using
sudo bash
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe
the db fails to start.

If I rename the data directory to data_from_backup and the data_save directory to data,
the db starts as it should.

The failed startup produces the following error:
091023 12:41:54 InnoDB: Operating system error number 13 in a file operation.
InnoDB: The error means mysqld does not have the access rights to
InnoDB: the directory.
InnoDB: File name ./ibdata1
InnoDB: File operation call: 'open'.
InnoDB: Cannot continue operation.
091023 12:41:54 mysqld_safe mysqld from pid file /usr/local/mysql/data/andy-nicastros-imac.local.pid ended

If I do a directory listing on the data directory that allows mysql to start (or the data_save directory) it looks like this:
-rw-rw---- 1 _mysql wheel 19071 23 Oct 12:49 andy-nicastros-imac.local.err
drwx------ 6 _mysql wheel 204 22 Oct 13:23 gfr
-rw-rw---- 1 _mysql wheel 5242880 23 Oct 12:49 ib_logfile0
-rw-rw---- 1 _mysql wheel 5242880 21 Oct 21:01 ib_logfile1
-rw-rw---- 1 _mysql wheel 10485760 23 Oct 12:49 ibdata1
drwxr-x--- 71 _mysql wheel 2414 21 Oct 20:50 mysql
drwxr-x--- 2 _mysql wheel 68 4 Sep 21:18 test
Note that there is no @ at the end of the permissions, so I assume its presence in the restored backup (see the questions above) is the problem.

Mac OS X 10.6.1 (Snow Leopard)
mysql 5.1 installed from a dmg.

Thanks for your help.
