Location is not available
C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is not accessible
Access Denied

I cannot open the Control Panel. It just flashes the egg timer and then does nothing. The Documents, Music, Computer, etc. folders are also inaccessible, does the same thing as the control panel.

Personalize is also inaccessible.

There are no system restores available. It must've been turned off.

I also ran all the Vista recovery/system checks from the Windows Anytime Upgrade CD it came with and it found nothing/did nothing.

In safe mode, the normal desktop icons re-appear, but still no access to the Control Panel, Personalize and the documents folders.

The computer is a HP Pavilion a1748x running on Vista Home Premium.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor
NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE

Thank You for any help.

I recently moved to a 2TB striped raid setup, replacing a setup where i had several independent disks, many with backups of my important files. Now everything is on the raid setup and i fear that if it fails i'd lose everything, much of which goes back up to a decade.

What I'd like to do is have my 'My Documents' folder mirrored onto an external drive. In the past I'd copy stuff manually, but I have 150+Gb of stuff in there and it's time consuming having to routinely overwrite everything each time i backup, especially since very little may have changed or been added since i last did it.

If I had some sort of mirror or sync set up then it would just replace or update changes I have made to my files.

How would I go about this?

I am running Win Vista Home Premium, 64bit. I do a lot of photography and I would like to add an option to read a jpeg photo's EXIF info when I right click on a .jpg file while on the internet. How can I do this? I have previously added the option so that I can right-click on my jpeg files in any of my photo folders, and it works great. However, while on any of the photo forums and a person has their jpeg file shown, I would like to be able to right click on the photo, and have the menu that opens up have the option to see the EXIF data e.g., information as to the camera used and all the settings used to take the photo. I hope someone out there can figure out my gimmerish and solve my problem.

hi all. this is my first post on here. im a beginner with computer repair so please bear with me as im at my wits end with this.

i am using vista home premium on a fujitsu siemens laptop. since monday 16th nov, i have been unable to get onto secure sites, ie online banking, paypal, my aol broadband account. when i go on paypal, i press the log on button and nothing happens. the screen stays the same and its as if the log on button doesnt work. when i go on online banking it goes very slow. the progress bar stops half way preventing me to log on, but the rest of the site works immediately when i press it. same for the aol broadband account.

what i have done so far:-
1. deleted cache
2. deleted cookies
3. configured modem to run at a faster bandwidth.
4. done the winsock thing on command prompt
5. tried to do a system restore and that fails half way through.
6. installed a new independent browser, firefox - still the same on there
7. taken off current antivirus and tried without - still the same
8. installed a brand new antivirus trial with nortons - still the same.

its not a problem with the area as i managed to use someone else computer on the next street and there was no issues with theirs.

can anyone suggest anything else that i can do. i rely on online banking and paypal.

please please help.

thanks in advance.

This problem started for me a few days ago out of the blue. I hadn't recently installed any new programs or drivers. It began with just the screen freezing for a second and then returning to normal with the error message "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I was running an EVGA NVIDIA 8800GTS 640MB card at the time. Nothing on the computer is overclocked nor has it been. Then the next day the error started to happen more frequently so I upgraded the drivers to the most recent release 191.07 WHQL. After this I started to see a lot of screen artifacts and began to run some diagnostic tools like FurMark, each time I tried to run this it would eventually freeze up the OS, resulting in either a BSOD with nvlddmkm.sys (0x00000116) to blame or just freeze up the screen and never come back until a system reboot. All of the temperatures were always within operating ranges. I tried cleaning out the drivers and installing various releases, as well as pretty much every posted solution I could find, but nothing helped. Attached are some of the pictures of the artifacts I was seeing. I decided to contact EVGA who told me to RMA the card as it was under warranty. Since there were graphic problems in the BIOS they thought it had to be the card malfunctioning and not the drivers, etc.

I thought all would be well and good from here, So i popped in the only spare graphics card I have which is a BFG NVIDIA 6200OC PCI. Unfortunately the problem continued to some degree. I no longer have the graphic artifacts, but I am still getting the "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." error whenever I try to do anything even minimally graphics intensive, for example looking though the pictures I posted at a fast pace, or even run the Windows Vista performance rating diagnostic. I decided to go ahead and do a fresh install of Vista, and even with that I am still getting the error message. Note that the OS was current with all updates in both cases.
I was hoping it was simply a defective graphics card, but even with a new card and a clean install of the OS, I am still getting the error message. All of the images are from when the 8800GTS was installed. I have done all the basic stuff like checking the HDD, RAM, virus scan, etc. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing this problem? Please let me know if any other information might be helpful.
Thanks,

hi i have searched alot of forums trying to solve this and the best solutions to other peoples similar problems were here so i appreciate the help of anyone who might know how to fix this problem. i put some data about my desktop pc that im worried about on my comp specs part of profile.

i use my desktop to produce music and theres literally years of work on that hard drive and the backup dvds are scratched to hell so if i am unable to fix this i will really be dissappointed at a huge loss for not making more backups :X

yesterday everything was working smoothly. the last things i remember doing were

-installing new virtual insturment executable [downloaded a newer version than i own from bittorrent]

-install and replace two other virtual insturments with newer versions [aquired also from torrent]

-used sony acid program whiel producing had no forseeable problems with new insturment setup updates computer is great performance

-before bed did weekly spyware malware check using Malwarebytes' complete scan of both my hard disc drives (c: d:)

-defragmented by secondary hard drive using Defraggler

i went to bed while the last two tasks were working because obviously they take a long time. returned to my computer today malwarebytes reported that there were no infections and the defragmentation from defraggler seemed to be fine computer was running normally. restart my computer a few minutes later to intially a long black screen load, after about 20-30 mins BSOD described later. attempts to start in normal mode do not work only eventually lead to bsod after some loading. only way to attempt to start windows is in safe mode. bsod that appears when trying to load vista normally read

Bluescreen:
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE
STOP OXOOOOOO9F

tried varius power cycling methods it turned out if i turned off my pc, and reset the switch (i think the voltage) on my CPUs power supply, that my pc WOULD boot up fine in normal mode. but if i attempted to restart windows would result in same BSOD. so the only way i've been able to get my computer into regular vista now is to switch the power voltage back and forth (it only works on the one setting) sometimes vista will actually load seemingly normal.

during these few times windows started i attempted a few things including system restore, which failed. also a custom non-automatic safe restore point i had made months ago would not load :(

this is where it gets kind of sticky because following a few tutorials to 'tweak' my system (mainly using the application TweakVI to get it to perform and game better i know i probably modified alot of things that could have contributed to this (although i made these tweaks months ago and computer has been running great for 3 years total and during these months since i applied these changes, i followed the ones in the tutorial) i believe most these tweaks applied to ram and different tweaks with cache and hard discs. they were under the first few categories of the TweakVI program for anyone tahts familiar with it.

i remember doing something else in this obscure tutorial where i right clicked my computer and went into some advanced options i have never seen where i assigned a certain amount of space for a 'cache' or something on my default hard drive (c:\) and it said to swap it to my other hard drive (d:\) and double the amount of space for the cache so i did these things. computer had worked fine after it seemingly faster. also this second drive d is the one i defragmented yesterday right before all of this scary bsod started.

also when i first got the computer i had this neighborhood kid that new about setting up cpus than me install a bootmanager and he attempted to install windows xp also having both windows xp and vista to start from but he f*ked it up because only vista would work in the bootmanager so i have never used the version of xp he installed. i believe he installed the windows xp operating system that i didn't use to my drive (d)

so i realize theres a cluter(#*$# of reasons i shouldnt have probably tweaked with these things because i've tried using every boot option in msconfig, every f8 option and repair option. my last resort was about 3 hours in the 'vista startup repair diagnosis repair log' (something that ran from an f8 startup repair option)

i ran all the processes in this mode to attempt to fix startup but they were all unsuccessful. it also had its own version of system restore points, but none of the restore points. i clicked the first option again and it scanned and i got a log that saidit was the startup diagnosis and repair log:

Session Details
System Disk = \Device\HardDisk0
directory c:\windows
autoCheckRun=0
#root causes=1

rootcause found:
-ACLs on file c:\windows\system32\werfault.exe are not proper
old value = 0xf01ff
repair action:access control repair
result complete successfuly

-Unspecified changes to system config might have caused the problem

System restore failed
error code=0x2
System files integrity check + repair failed
error code = 0x2

----

right now im using safe mode and tuneup utilities disk doctor to check the drives for errors (right now its doing my drive d and taking forever, but i doubt this is going to fix my problem. theres a hotfix available for problems similar to mine on microsoft and other posts but mine is not from hibernation its from trying to start i get this bsod.

this is a really long report i was trying to cover as many bases as possible. for any of u not bored enough from it that try and help i really appreciate it ill check back if there's other information i need to provide or steps to follow. ty guys

EDIT: i just finished checking the file system of both drives and it said found no problems.

altho for drive c it said
the type of file system is NTFS
cannot open volume for direct access
windows has finished checking the disk

Now type "netsh winsock reset" without the quotes and hit enter.
Next type, “netsh int ip reset" once again without the quotes and hit enter.
Ignore it if it says that one of the repairs couldn’t be done and now restart the computer.

I have a Gateway ML6732 running Windows Vista and recently my memory card reader won't recognize anything. It used to work beautifully, and I don't know what's wrong with it now. Does anybody know what drivers would be associated with it? I've checked my device manager and I have a yellow exclamation mark next to my SCSI/RAID Host Controller. I don't know if that has anything to do with my memory card reader, but I can't find an update anywhere. If anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello,
I have an odd issue with one of the computers in my organization. The user has an HP Pavilion DV6000 series laptop with Vista 32 Home Premium. Occasionally if he is sending a message through Yahoo Messenger, after tabbing from another window, instead of typing his intended message, Yahoo Messenger shows a keyboard layout sequence. For example, if he intends to type "Thank you", it shows "Asdfj Kl;"

The only fix (temporary), is to tab to another program such as Outlook, compose an email message (characters show properly there)., then tab back to Yahoo Messenger and type away. This happens both with external Logitech cordless keyboard and the built in keyboard on the laptop. I have tried removing Yahoo Messenger and reinstalling, checked language settings on keyboard in control panel, uninstalled/reinstalled Logitech driver, replaced batteries in laptop.

Anyone ever seen this before? I'm stumped, and google searches for problem almost always lead to a stuck shift or ALT key, which is not the case here.

Thanks in advance!

Hi guys.
Recently I've started getting an error message when logging into Windows Vista Home Premium. (SP2 I believe)
It says something along the lines of:

'Windows has encountered a critical error and will restart in one minute. Please save all your work'

Windows continues to load it's normal bits and pieces, my virus scanner and a couple of other startup programs before restarting as if I had hit the hard reset button.
I've also noticed if I don't login, just leaving it at the account selection screen restarts the computer after a minute also.

It was originally doing this maybe once or twice a week, however it's now doing it every time I turn the computer on, making it unusable for anything I'd like to do.
Also originally, using the 'boot logging' option (the one that outputs driver loading to a text file, although I'm not sure where) would stop it doing anything at all, but it now just acts exactly the same.

The only thing I can recall 'going wrong' recently just before I started getting the error was a powercut when windows was installing updates. The windows sidebar (which I normally have disabled) has occasionally popped up a few gadgets, but not the bar itself, and come up with an exception error. However I have gone in and disabled the sidebar in safemode and also renamed the exe itself to stop it loading and the error persists.

I have also run windows update a few times since first getting the error and from what I could see, windows has not detected an update install failure and has just carried on installing newly released updates as normal.

I can still get in as normal in safe mode although disabling everything at startup has no affect on the computer restarting normally.
I've run a full virus scan using Clamwin and although it found a few problems it didnt appear to be related as the problem is still occuring.
I've tried updating some drivers as well, including graphical, sound (although it's onboard sound and as usual a pain to get drivers for) and the motherboard.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, don't hesitate to ask for any extra info you may need if I've not included it!

Wrin.

I use Linux and Windows, and this is really a Linux and Windows issue, but the issue is only occurring when I load Windows. I say it is a Lin/Win issue because it started after using a virtualization program over Linux to use Windows. I used Sun Virtual Box. I was impressed, but then it started crashing when I would run programs, so I reinstalled it, same issue. So I deleted the virtual machines and the virtual drive space. I though my hard disk was back to normal, but then I decided I still wanted Windows and loaded Vista onto a partition. Problem is, now the only RAM that Windows recognizes is the 3000 MB I allocated to it while in use with the virtual machine while I actually have 6000MB of RAM. But the Virtualaization software is gone, in fact I reloaded Windows and Ubuntu after backing up my data. I have no idea how to rectify the issue, does anyone else? Thanks in advance!

Ok, ive got a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Windows Vista Home Premium.

When I turn it on it looks like its going to load and then reboots.

I have tried to disable automatic restarts to see what the BSOD is but the screen flashes too fast for me to read it before it restarts again.

I've tried safe mode and last known good, both of which fail.

I've tried "Startup repair" but it says " "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically" and when I click more details I get "Startup repairV2,
NoRootCause"

I've tried the following "bootrec.exe" options:

/FixMbr - says it was successful

/FixBoot - says it was successful

/ScanOs - Cannot find any windows installations

/RebuildBcd - say it was successful and then ScanOs works but settings arent saved.

I've run a CHKDSK /R which doesnt return any errors but when I try to run SFC /runnow I get the following error:

"There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

I've run the built in Dell Diagnostics and all pass but will test hard drive tonight using manufactures tools.
I'd really like to get the system working again without having to factory reset it.

Any advice or suggestions? have I missed something?

Hi there! I'm not sure exactly where to begin with all this so I'll start with this past Saturday when I decided to wipe the Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook. I did a clean install of Win XP (slipstreamed with SP2) and then an upgrade install to Vista Business. I installed SP1 and SP2, antivirus and all my security apps. It was at this point that I decided I wanted to have a dual-boot system with Ubuntu. Following this guide (http://apcmag.com/how_to_dualboot_vi...rst.htm?page=1) I set up Ubuntu 8.10 and upgraded it to 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). Here is where my problems began!! The GRUB boot loader did not configure the boot\grub\menu.lst. I manually entered the following info to force GRUB. "sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst". Then I
added these lines:

### END DEBIAN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST

title Other operating systems:
root

title Windows Vista/Longhorn (loader)
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

I had a dual-boot system except that Vista entered the dreaded Configuring 3 of 3 update loop. I tried a restore to no avail. I tried booting to the repair console and performing bootrec.exe /fixboot.....nothing. I tried booting to the repair console and rebuilding the BCD using these steps:

bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd

I have tried booting to the recovery console and executing these commands.....once again to no avail:

disabled driver signature
last known good
safe mode
safe mode with command prompt
safe mode with networking

cd to windows\system32\drivers
del pcmcia.sys*
del 1394bus.sys
del ohci1394.sys
cd \driverstore\filerepository\
del pcmcia.inf*
del 1394.inf*
del sbus.inf*
del sdbus.inf*
c:\
cd\windows\inf
del sdbus.inf*
del sdbus.PFN*
exit and rebooted

***************************************
cd windows\system32\config
ren default default.old
ren sam sam.old
ren security security.old
ren software software.old
ren system system.old
cd regback
copy default c:\windows\system32\config
copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
copy security c:\windows\system32\config
copy software c:\windows\system32\config
copy system c:\windows\system32\config

***********************************************************
rename c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml pending.old

regedit

Then find and delete the following keys:

AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving
PendingXmlIdentifier
*************************************************************
I have disabled everything in the BIOS that can be disabled.
I have also run a chkdsk /f

I am at a total loss for what else to try.

Here's the error message I get when trying to use system repair:
Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically
If I try to use Safe Mode, it stops on crcdisk.sys briefly and then goes on to a STOP error of 0x000000f4 (0x00000003, (that's the only numbers I can capture).

At present GRUB has been damaged and Ubuntu won't boot. Vista won't boot. I have also run MEMTEST86 with no errors.

I would appreciate any help you could give me. I am totally at wits end on this one. Prior to installing Ubuntu, Vista was *finally* working and playing well. After Ubuntu install, it's been unbootable. :(

Thanks.........Shonda

I have an HP Laptop with Vista Premium operating system. My computer has been having problems for awhile now and I would like to see if we can fix it. For one it freezes up on me often. The other thing is it has some corrupted files and it has corrupted other files as well. I had Microsoft word that just would no longer work so I decided to download it and it would not work. I noticed other programs I had put in got corrupted as well like my Picture programs that worked fine, now it no longer works and I would reload the software as well and again it did not work.

So is there is any hope for my laptop that is only a little over a year old.:(

All the 'solutions' I've found point to different programs as being the problem, most of which I don't have. (And those which point to generic software, e.g. video drivers, don't fit my symptoms-unless somebody thinks that Vista's SP2 updated my video drivers? That doesn't seem likely, although I'll try updating them myself in desperation. As soon as I move the production stuff to a new PC.)

Anyway, at this point I don't even care if anybody can tell me what the problem is if you can just tell me where to look! I'm reasonably competent on figuring things out, but generally I have at least some data to start with. This gives me nothing.

Please HELP,

I have no disk space and no literacy with computers to fix it. I have a 66GB hard drive, but less than 1GB available. I hardly have any programs that didn't come with this thing (I deleted everything, but my iTunes and my personal files last time). This happened a few months ago as well. Feel free to check out my other post on the subject matter to get a more complete understanding. I've deleted my temp files, recycle bin, and even expanded my shadow storage capacity to 18GB and nothing has worked. Everytime I try to do a disk cleanup, I only get a few hundred KB...never more than 1GB. If anybody is willing to come to the rescue, I'd more than appreciate it. I need this computer to last until the summer I begin law school. Thanks for any help anybody is willing to provide.

Take care,

Hello everyone.

About 4 days ago, I went to work and left my computer on, prior to going to work my computer was working perfectly, no issues at all really. After coming back home from work, my computer just seems to freeze whenever I opened Firefox. I thought it was FF so I uninstalled it, that did not work. It just continued to freeze up randomly it seems. It doesn't seem to freeze as much using IE, but If I go to certain websites (facebook, hulu) it will occasionally freeze. I've tried a system restore, also virus scans, malware/spyware, disk check via CMD.

I've tried running in Safemode with networking and when I tried to use FF it froze again. Also if I just have msn and skype on and use IE I can be fine for days, but if I try other websites it will occasionally freeze.

At this point I'm not really sure what's wrong with it.

Any advice that you think could help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks =D

I inserted a new camera card into my computer and as i transferred photos my computer shut off. When i turned it back on it was still transferring and then cut back off. It would not turn on for hours. When it did there was a window up saying that windows was unable to start and attempting to repair. It was not able but starts up anyways. Some times the screen is back but i can see it if i shine a flashlight on it. Other times its normal. when it starts up it will work but the mouse and keys is very delayed and will cut back off and may take me hours to get it back.
I found a file that was added when i transferred and deleted it. I ran spybot and adware and avg. they found nothing. I did system restore. it said it was unable. I dumped all of windows and did a recovery. It didnt help. What now? I am a beginner so talk English and dont assume i understand :o

I have been unable to do Windows udate lately. Vista is not updating getting Error Code 80070057 and Error E.
I have disabled Windows Defender, Firewall, changed the Windows Update service from Automatic Delay to Automatic and still no change. I emailed ASUS about it and they recommened:

Please visit the below Microsoft Knowledge Base article to resolve your issue. They are providing the System Update Readiness Tool which can also fix Windows Update errors such as the one you are receiving. Please follow the instructions on the below web site:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

I did this and it just keep installing, closing the Windows update reopened and then said I needed to install the same thing again, I did they 4 times, also tried to do a full reboot after installing it but no change. So then I went to manually downloaded the KB947821 and installed it but no change I still wasn't able to update any Windows updates. Can anyone please help. Thanks in advance

This is probably easily fixable but here's the story:

My laptop came w/ the 60 day trial Norton. Everytime i start up my laptop, it asks to install Norton. I always ignore it, but this time i accidentally hit install. I didn't want to install it, and it didn't allow you to stop it from installing so i just turned off my computer in hopes of preventing it from installing. I know that's not exactly the proper thing to do, but i didn't know how else to stop it.

When i restarted my computer, i was unable to connect to the internet.
My wireless couldn't pick up a connection. I unplugged my router, replugged it in and it still wouldn't connect.

So i did system restore to an earlier date and it solved the problem of connecting to the internet. Although i now cannot connect to my AIM [Aol Instant Messenger] / Msn Messenger / Yahoo Messenger.

Screenshot Here:

My wireless says "Not connected, You are currently not connected to any networks" but i'm able to use the internet? but not AIM/Msn/Yahoo.

I'm going to assume i have some sort of firewall blocking the connection?
I already uninstalled Norton completely so that's not an issue, but the windows firewall has always been on. Even when it's shut off i still cannot get my AIM/Msn/Yahoo to work, Nor can i get my wireless to say Connected like it used to, it continues to say "You are currently not connected to any networks" when i am connected.

I've tried the "Diagnosed & Repair" Option from Network and Sharing settings it says "Windows did not find any problems w/ your internet connection". So it makes me think like i have some sort of Security issue, or something blocking my connection?

I've had no problems ever w/ my connections, and computer up until this issue w/ turning off my computer when installing Norton. It feels as if it's screwed up everything w/ my computer, and loading files sometimes.

Full Screenshot Of Msn Aswell:

Does anyone have any clue on how to fix this?
I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Hey everyone,

This problem started happening all of the sudden and is getting really annoying.

I built this computer a little over a year and a half ago. Recently the hard drives failed and I had to buy two new ones (I configure them RAID 0). Needless to say, I'm running off a recently fresh install of Windows, have healthy hard drives, and I keep my computer clean. I leave it on all the time, and recently if I left it alone for an extended period of time (went to sleep, went to work, or went out at night for a couple of hours), the computer would stay on but would not respond. The monitor's orange sleep light would be on and I couldn't use a keystroke or move the mouse to get back. The only option is to press the hard reset button. I'm at work right now, and I'm sure when I get home it will be crashed again.

Specs:
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit
ASUS P5K-E WiFi AP
Intel E6850
Nvidia GeForce 9800GX2
4 GB DDR2 RAM
