I need to find a way of updating multiple batch files that are stored in the Netlogon share on the domain controllers. I only need to change one line in the batch file if it exists to a new value.

I really don't want to do this manually as there are hundreds of batch files in the Netlogon share.

Thanks
THE ISSUE:

As it happens I've had quite a few problems with it regarding the graphics card, everything else seems to work fine. Although this card is not on intels supported list it worked to a point but has now decided that it has had enough and does not want to play cricket. I have brought two other graphics cards that were on intels supported list but nether worked.

Does anyone have any graphics cards that they would recommend?

So am open to suggestions and any advice that I can get.

Yours Sincerely Lane_399

I'm running a 2k3 Domain Controller specifically for a few services to hopefully securely configure them. My setup is as follows:

Modem

Linksys RVS4000 VPN GB Router (Providing DHCP) 10.10.0.x/24

Media Server hosting Adito (OpenVPN-als) SSL VPN and other media services.

Domain Controller

The SSL VPN is what I'm most concerned about, adito runs as it's own service, what I'm wanting to do is restrict access to each client's home lan. I don't want them accessing the VPN outside of their lan. Now Adito does provide IP Restrictons which work wonderfully, but my clients are all using Dynamic IP's and are not going to switch to static.

What I'm wondering is once I join the media server to the domain, what would be the best method to restrict access? For now accessing adito they just point their web browser at my ip and access it, but I'm going to set it up so they have to VPN into the domain first, but even then they can access it from other locations or give out account info to friends.

What I'm thinking is if there is a way to add restriction based off the mac address of their router's or some other form of restriction?

Subject : W2K8: Can Ping web site, Cannot browse internet

I had to move two servers from a different lab. After the move, we can not access any URL.

I can ping ip address on the network as well as ping web sites. This means name resolution is working as expected. I searched for similar issue and reset the ipaddress using netsh int ip reset reset.log, ipconfig /dnsflush and other suggested steps. One thing I noticed is IPV6 enabled where as IPV4 being used for configuring the IP address.

Any suggestions to fix it?

Hey, we're having a problem with our server, i think? We've got a couple workstations networked to our file server via drive mapping. Lately we've had a problem, if someone double clicks a drive to access it, we get an error saying "Error loading Pagefi1e.sys". I wonder if its a virus since the 1 should be an l.

a google search for the error message yielded a lot of chinese sites, nothing really useful. im not an IT specialist, we contract out the IT to a 3rd party company that comes in periodically. so, im trying to fix this one myself..

edit:

the server is windows server 2003, the various drives we have mapped are all in raid 0,1 and 5. the problem is on all drives, regardless of raid configuration. the workstations are all windows vista x64 business.

I am looking into getting the Windows Home Server program but have a few basic questions

I don't fully understand the software setup. Can I install it on a computer that is running XP or is it a totally separate OS?

Maybe if I explain the situation - I work for a small non-profit organization and we only have one computer currently running XP Pro. I am thinking I can install Windows Home server on this computer and allow the organization's Board members remote access to files via this program. Or do I need a dedicated computer running WHS to do this?

Our budget is very small so if I can just buy a copy of WHS and install it on the current computer that would be great.

Thanks for any answers

Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction here:

We have two Windows 2000 servers running as AD servers. After picking up a few 2003 licenses I'm trying to add a 2003 server to the mix (with the intention of retiring the old ones in the future).

I've run adprep /forestprep on the schema master and adprep /domainprep on the domain master. Both finished without errors and when I try to run them again, they report that the prep has already been completed.
However, when I try to run the AD wizard on the 2003 machine, I get an error saying that the "forest is unprepared for installing 2003. Use the adprep command to prepare both the forest and the domain. <snip> The version of Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible with the version of Active Directory on this computer."

Any suggestions about what to try next? All the machines are running 32 bit OSes (there was some 32/64 mix incompatibility reported on technet).
Both Server 2000 machines are running SP4

Cheers all

Could you sort this problem out for me, because I just don't have the know how to do it myself.

I have a internet connection problem that occured suddenly 4 days ago.

Every 2 minutes my internet connection goes onto "Access: Local Only". I can't view any pages. I thought it might be my signal strength which is not very good in my area. Sometimes it roams onto another network.

But recently I've been getting this "local area" problem.

I'm currently using a mobile broadband service (i.e. dongle) with Network 3 and they've told me that there is nothing that they can do about this problem. I have been with them for a year with no problems at all except for bad signal.

Also my "Local Area Connection" has a little red x beside it and the status is "unplugged".

I have diagnosed the problem using windows: "Cannot connect with DNS server".

Having looked at the properties and so forth everything seems to be in order. I have tried that "cmd" Netsh Winsoc command but that makes no difference. I have even tried System Restore and still the problem persists.

Any advice?

I am having a problem with a File Server running Server 2003 R2 SP2. About every five days I keep getting browser errors (event ids 8021 and 8032). The error states it is unable to retrieve a list of servers from the browser master which is my domain controller.

When this error occurs, I cannot log into the domain and it sometimes has issues loading local profiles. Also I cannot ping or run ipconfig, the OS returns an error that the application failed to initialize. I try to restart the netlogon server and it doesn't start up (internal windows error).

Both of my DCs are running DNS and WINS. I am not running multiple network cards (one is disabled). I do have a usb device that is hooked up via ethernet to a VM.

If I reboot this server, all is well for about five days, then I get these browser errors again.

I have tried MS recommendations here:
but no luck.

My client uses an 2003 exchange server with a smarthost. It has worked flawlessly for years until the 1st of the month. They noticed that their connection speed to the internet had dramatically decreased. It was so slow that I could not remote into the server. My connection would time out.

I went onsite and saw that the SMTP service was using huge amounts of memory and the Messages Qued for deferred delivery had thousands of messages waiting to be sent. I also went into the mailroot folder and found over 20,000 messages sitting in the Que folder.

After checking the message headers in all of the Qued messages I came to the conclusion that a spammer forged the sender and return path information that matched that of my clients domain. The email addresses the spammer forged don't exist on my clients domain and they are not on the smarthost's either.

This has created an NDR loop between the exchange server and the Smarthost's mail server (unix based). Essentially someone sent out a bunch of spam probably as a BCC and addressed the To field to Custservice@company.com and made the return path agrieg@company.com . Then each spam message comes into the smarthost's server looking for custservice@company.com. The smarthost doesn't recognize the mailbox name and forwards it to the exchange server. The exchange server doesn't recognize the name and tries to send an NDR to the sender (who's name is forged and points right back to the same domain) Then the smarthost tries to send the NDR back to the exchange server. Take that and times it by however spams the spammer sent and it's a good way to mess up an exchange server.

Here is an example of the header info:

Return-path: <agrieg@company.com>
Received: from adsl-074-247-xxx-xxx.sip.dab.bellsouth.net
by localhost.localdomain with esmtp (Exim 4.69)
(envelope-from <agrieg@company.com>)
In exchanges system manager I used sender filtering to block Mailer-Daemon@smarthost.com and my clients server started behaving again. they were able to send and receive no problem. But about a day after I did that the smarthost called saying that their exchange server had a problem and was slowing down their unix mail server.

Also note that the Smarthost has mailboxes on their system for all the users in the domain
that the uses can access through the web.

So what do you think is my best option?

Disable Non-delivery reports in global settings or should I create a mailbox for the non-existing user and take in all the messages to end the loop.

We have a mail-enabled universal security group called Managers. A few days ago someone noticed that about 6 intern's accounts had found their way into that group. Is there some sort of Power Shell command I could run to find out when those accounts made their way into that security group?

I have 41 DHCP servers all across the globe.

In order to find out the server I want to work on I have to get a machine name (which in itself is a task due to the different naming conventions each site uses) and then pray that it is on (we cannot remote wakeup or do full subnet scans due to network security), remotely run an IPCONFIG on the machine (and hope and pray I don't get any permissions errors) and then I have to trace back to the DHCP server that is serving to get to the scope.

Is there any utility/query that I can add the list of DHCP servers and type in the first 3 octets of a scope and it will tell me directly which DHCP server I need to work on? This would eliminate alot of my bottleneck

For some reason none of the clients can access the E drive without using the Administrator username and password setup for the server itself. Obviously this is not desirable. I looked into setting up a security policy to do restrict/allow access to relevant files and folders but have not been able to do this successfully. I've also looked at trying to do it through Sharing without any joy. I've googled this and from what I can gather group policies are the way to go but I'm not sure where I'm going wrong. Can anyone help?

Im trying to create a program that will allow partial control of a server from a PDA..

Ive got in mind at the min.. sending command lines (from the PDA) (from programmed keypress sequences i.e. Click USERS then ADD then get text boxes up to add all the info and then send all that via command line to the server for it to be executed).

I know that its a very vague idea at the moment.. just wondered if you think its possible?

I set a static IP address for one of my network adapters and mistyped my subnet mask.... I went in to the adapter settings and fixed it to the correct subnet and my network started working correctly...

The problem I am having is every time I reboot, the subnet mask resets to the incorrect one making my network drives inaccessible and requiring to manually go a change the subnet mask again...

It just does not seem to want to remember the updated settings....

Any thoughts? Im running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard x64

What I would like to do is either build or buy a cheap home server setup and then use VMware ESXi(or server or whatever) to throw a couple virtual machines of server 2003 on that(a DC, file server, some other stuff to play with). Would this work? And since they'd be virtual machines would they still all have their own IP? Would I be able to RDP into them and use them just like they were stand-alone servers? It would just be a lot cheaper/easier this way than having 2-3 seperate machines.

Hello here is a hard one and any suggestions are welcome. I have a client running SBS 2003 the server has all the latest patches installed. Every now and again users are unable to authenticate to the domain at all. When you try to go to RWW or OWA the page does not come up reporting service unavailable, users are unable to log into their workstations being told they have the wrong username and password, administrator account cannot log into the server when sitting at the machine. The only way to resolve the problem is to hard boot the machine then everything goes back to normal. When I am able to log in the system all the events in the system log prior to the hard boot are gone. The only thing I can see is that once the event has happened the application log throws about 1000 ExchangeAL Errors with event id 8026 every second. Because of this we are only able to tell that the event has happened but are unable to find a cause. Thanks

Hi Guys,
I have a problem that keeps popping up:
Dynamic registration or deletion of one or more DNS records associated with DNS domain 'DomainDnsZones.promedis.pvt.' failed. These records are used by other computers to locate this server as a domain controller (if the specified domain is an Active Directory domain) or as an LDAP server (if the specified domain is an application partition).

Possible causes of failure include:
- TCP/IP properties of the network connections of this computer contain wrong IP address(es) of the preferred and alternate DNS servers
- Specified preferred and alternate DNS servers are not running
- DNS server(s) primary for the records to be registered is not running
- Preferred or alternate DNS servers are configured with wrong root hints
- Parent DNS zone contains incorrect delegation to the child zone authoritative for the DNS records that failed registration

My setup:
Windows Server 2008
Server IP: 192.168.0.100
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
P-DNS: 192.168.0.1

promedis.pvt is a "ficticious" domain in the sense that its not a real TLD that is registered, but rather just a domain for in office use.

According to the points above I should check my TCP/IP and DNS settings, but surely that is all correct? The primary dns / gateway are both set to my ADSL router which gets its Primary/Secondary DNS servers directly from the ISP.

What to do?

Thanks in advance!

Kind Regards,
Michael

Before the rename, PTO had a display name of PTO and the alias was PTO
Example: PTO <PTO> as it appears in the "To" section

Now it appears as: PTO <PTO2> The 2 profiles got crossed and I've already corrected the alias and display name in the AD. What am I missing?

It's the same problem with PTO2 - PTO2's alias is showing up as PTO

Here's what I've done so far to try and fix it:

1. Checked the display name - all correct
2. Checked the alias name - it was incorrect but, it's still resolving to the wrong name
3. Rebuild OAB
4. Update OAB on the client
