| No signal + humming sound from speakers when playing games I've recently purchased a brand new PC for gaming, i'll list the specs below.
I've downloaded steam and bought a few games e.g. Arma 2, Skyrim, Blacklight Retrobution and my system crashes when I play these games after about 5-10 minutes. The screen goes black to a "NO SIGNAL" image and my speakers make a loud humming noise much like the sound is on repeat. The only solution is to perform a hard shutdown by holding the power button. I've checked the VGA cable is connected correctly and i've updated my graphics cards drivers. I've also let Windows perform all the updates as it's a new computer. It's beyond me now so that's why i've come to you guys. I'd appreciate any help on the matter. [EDIT] Went to town and bought a DVI cable to see if that would change anything, it lasts a little longer then crashes again. I installed an internal monitoring system and saw that the graphics card temp went to 76C when playing Arma 2 then crashed. Last edited by JamesA91; 14-Jul-2012 at 10:15 AM.. | Hi and welcome to TSG. My initial thought, based on your description would be either a heat or power related problem. So, with that in mind, can you do the following please: http://library.techguy.org/wiki/DXDiag 1) Click Start > Run, (or Windows key + R on Vista), and type dxdiag, and hit OK. 2) If a dialog box comes up, click Yes. 3) If there is a Run 64-bit DXDiag button next to the Help button, click it. 4) When the progress bar in the lower right corner of the program is done, click the Save All Information button. 5) Save the information to somewhere you'll remember (the desktop is the easiest choice). 6) Open the saved file, hit Ctrl+A (select all), and then Ctrl+C (copy). 7) Then, paste that information into your thread. If the information is too long to fit in the thread, then you can delete from the end of the file until it fits. The first few sections (System information through PS/2 Devices) are the most important. Thanks. |

| Out of the bits I am familiar with, nothing looks out of place in the DXDiag. drivers are up to date etc as far as I can see. Any joy with the HWMonitor screenshots? You say that it crashed when the GPU hit 76C, does it consistently do it at around that temp or was that a one off? Was this a 'big brand' pre built system or a custom build? If it's 'big brand' (HP, Dell, Acer etc) what is the exact make and model? If it's brand new, I would only do some very basic diagnostics myself and then look at an RMA, espcially if it is a branded pre built system. Tinkering about too much could invalidate your warranty. |

| Apologies I completely forgot to do the HWMonitor checks, i'll do it tonight when I get home from work. Usually between 70-80C, it's consistently doing it around that temperature range. It's a pre-built system from a company in the midlands, they're currently helping me find the cause of the problem and hopefully solve it by sending me a replacement graphics card. Thanks for the help, i'll try the HWMonitor checks tonight. |

| It does sound like a possible issue with the GPU when it hits a certain temperature. I had a similar problem with an older NVidia 8800GT that would crash in many games when it went over around 75C (well within it's thermal specs), I got around it by installing an aftermarket cooler to make sure the temp stayed down and it was fine. I would also check that the correct BIOS version has been flashed as that CPU needs BIOS version 0801 (P8H61-M LE/USB3 BIOS 4203), assuming I have found the correct board here. The date for that BIOS version release is 12th July 2012 so its pretty new and increases stability with that CPU, so might be worth looking at flashing to that version if not already installed. |

| I've attached the image files to this reply. You'll notice that the temperature rises after around 2 minutes of play, it actually reached 72C. I also noticed that one of the drivers failed, came up with Kernel Power error. |

| Your temperatures are fine really, infact at idle they are very cool in general, 72C is nothing to worry about for a GPU. The event ID is just telling you that the graphics drivers failed / crashed but then successfully recovered. The PSU might be an issue, unfortunately there is no sensor reading for the +12v rails etc in HWMonitor. Do you know exactly what make and model the PSU is, it should say on the side of it. Double check all your cables and connectors inside the case, as seen before even a very slighly out of position power connector can cause problems. Disconnect and reconnect every connection in turn to ensure they are fully in place. I would probably also do a test on the RAM to rule that out as a possible cause. To do that create a bootable CD of Memtest86 available here, then startup from the CD and run the full test on all your RAM, let it complete at least 2 full passes, this may take quite some time to complete. It might be worth running it with the side of the case off and a fan blowing into it for extra cooling on the GPU. This would only be a temporary thing to see if the GPU stops crashing if it is kept cooler. As I said, I had a similar sounding issue with an old 8800GT which was fine as long as I kept it under 70C (ish), it shouldn't crash at those temps but it did. Check the Asus website for any hardware driver updates or even a BIOS update as this may be a known problem. Only look at applying a BIOS update if it fixes your specific problem though, don't worry about it if there are updates that fix problems you aren't experiencing. |
