Doom?
I recently bought The Doom Collector's Edition set for my Dell Inspiron 1525, and I haven't been able to get it to work. I have Windows Vista on my computer, and when I try to open any of the three games it comes with, I get a message that says,

"This application has failed to start because DPLAY.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."

Does anyone know a legit place to download DPLAY.dll and where to put it once I have it, or just a way to fix this problem? Simpler terms would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

TJ

Before you start downloading files off the internet, try reinstalling the game. I think DPLAY.dll has to do with DX9, and you're on Vista, so you have DX10. You could try running Microsoft Update or copying the file over from a computer that has an updated version of DX9.

I don't think you should copy the file from another pc, instead try to right click on one of the games. select properties->compability and check the box that says "run this program in compability for:"
then select the operating system the game needs (look on the back of the box for the game- it should say like: operating system: windows 95/98/NT or XP)

so if it says operating system: windows 95. Choose 95 from the dropdown menu and press use, OK. now try to run the game again.

this should be done for elderly games to make them run better

From what I have seen, it will be Windows 98. What I would suggest is to uninstall, then go to the CD (right click on CD icon in My Computer and click open) and right click on the setup.exe file. Go to the compatibilty tab like Esbenovich mentioned and choose Windows 98 compatibility. This should put all files under W98 compatibility when it installs.

Note that since you are using Vista, it may still not guarantee playability due to the age.
