Unhappy Terrible framerate in WoW, nothing so far has worked.
Hi everyone . This is my first time posting on these forums and I am hoping that they are as helpful as they appear to be.
First of all let me state that I know my computer's stats are by no means ideal for any online game, let alone WoW. That being said, my husband is running the game on a system nearly identical to mine and has very few framerate problems. He is using an AMD Duron processor and a "Third party" video card. He claims this card is not as good as the one I am running on. His system is also homemade and does not even have a complete case, the power supply box is literally laying outside the tower on the desk. I cannot even begin to comprehend why my system seems so handicapped compared to his. His system normally gets about 30-40 fps in solo game zones, and about 10 or so in high population areas and group events. Mine on the other hand gets ~22 fps on average and about 30 at best in low pop. areas, and about 2-7 fps in high population areas. I know these systems should not be able to run WoW "well" and I am not looking for 200 fps out of them, but I would at least like mine to perform as well as his in game. 20 fps in large groups would be heaven.

All that being said, here are the steps I have taken:
Turned all video settings down as far as they will go (this includes multisampling values and screen resolution)
Disabled all unnecessary third party modifications to the game
Defragmented all disks
Cleaned up all disks
Ran Advanced System Care's system optimizer, repair, and deep clean of ram
Ran Malwarebytes anti-malware, which came back clean
Edited my config wtf manually to Blizzard tech support specified values
Attempted to update windows (I say attempted because it suddenly stopped updating a quarter of the way through and didnt upgrade everything, now it wont reopen and the website thinks I have an unregistered version :S) I should mention that my husband has not updated his windows files on his system in about a year.
Updated motherboard and video drivers
Even removed the side panel on the tower and set a floor fan next to it to aid cooling since it is getting hot where I live and the poor thing needs all the help it can get.
I also have startup set to only start necessary system functions, and have updates and system restore disabled (I am aware this is risky, I am desperate)

I know this is just a game but it is killing me watching my husbands screen as he moves flawlessly on an "inferior" system while I sit frozen in place for 10 seconds at a time.

A more specific description of the problem is that my framerate can reach the high thirties when there isnt much going on, even in 25 man groups I can move fine until combat begins (spell detail, things moving suddenly, etc..) then my screen will freeze and then recover at about 2 fps. This number gradually increases as targets die and animations dissipate. Out of combat I have noticed that I can move and even at a semi-decent framerate, by which I mean I can move without glitches, but then will suddenly freeze for about 4 or 5 seconds then go back to 20 or so fps. This is not due to any increase in graphic rendering or screen animation, it seems to be very sporratic and have no real trigger.

I do not have the money to upgrade this system's components right now, I know that is probably the best fix, but I feel like since my husband's computer has even worse parts mine should at least be performing as well. Thank you all so much in advance for any bight ideas you all can lend me. I am almost certain there is some setting or background program causing problems that I am overlooking. I look forward to reading your responses .

You haven't given any indication to what hardware you're running or what hardware your husband is running. You seem to have taken his word for it that your computer has higher specifications than his.

Your frame rate is affected by many different things which could all be the cause of your problem. To start with, I assume you're using the same internet connection as your husband, and that nobody is doing anything else on that line at the same time such as web browsing/youtube/or any multimedia downloading.

The next thing that could affect your game performance is how you're connected to your network at home. If it's a wireless connection, how far are you from the router? If it's not, how old is your network card/motherboard. Do you have any firewalls or closed ports on your router which are getting in the way of your connection?

What's the clock frequency on your CPU, How much memory(RAM) do you have in your PC, and what is the make and model of your graphics card, and how much dedicated memory does it have?

Apart from the software issues that might exist which could potentially slow down gameplay, there are many different hardware technical issues that could be a problem.

Post your DXDiag report so we can see your system specifications, and make sure your drivers are in working order.
  • Click Start -> Run, and type 'dxdiag' (without quotes), and hit OK.
  • If a dialog box comes up, click yes.
  • When the progress bar in the lower right corner of the program is done, click the 'Save All Information' button
  • Save the information to somewhere you'll remember (the desktop is the easiest choice).
  • Open the saved file, hit Ctrl+A (select all), and then Ctrl+C (copy).
  • Then, paste that information into your thread.

cancon is right, there are too many factors that affect framerate, you can't assume one computer will do better because one component is better. You could have the latest $500 video card, but if you're using it with a 300MHz Celeron, it won't do you any good. So let's see the machine you're working with, and figure it out from there.

Here is all the diagnostic info, if there isnt any obvious problem here and my husband's computer's diagnostic is needed for comparison let me know and I will post it. It is true that I am taking my husband's word on which specs are superior, but I have little choice given that my knowledge of computers is so limited. I knew nothing about any of it until I started playing WoW a couple years ago. When I realized how horribly incompetent this system is I started doing alot of reading on troubleshooting and optimizing operations. That is where I have accumulated what little I do know, but as far as understanding what component will function better and why, I am totally in the dark. Thanks again so much you guys. I just don't even know what I would do with myself if this system were able to run smoothly.

There are well.. A few things you can do (from my point of view, not the most complete checklist you can do :P )

1) Update your Graphic card's drivers.

2) Get a new graphics card

3) Ensure that your system is clean (helps sometimes :P)

4) Get more RAM

5) Email support@blizzard.com with your dxdiag log file, along with a description of your problem (after all, the creators of the game know best ).

No wonder. My PC is 4 years old and it has a Pentium D. Pentium 4 has really become ancient, the frequency on that processor is also abysmal. Not to mention you have a less than average amount of RAM and a really old graphics card. This is why gaming is so expensive

Okay... lets see...

I think the best way to go would be to buy a new computer. You're not going to get anywhere gaming with those specs.

If you invest in an AMD board and a Dual-Core AMD processor, 2GB RAM (Memory is dirt-cheap nowadays), and a graphics card, that won't actually cost you that much.

AMD board = ~$50
AMD processor = ~$50
2GB RAM = ~$20
Decent Radeon card = $60

Those prices are maximums.. $180 and your computer will be a lot more competent. This is assuming that your case is ATX and your power supply won't need replacing.

Unfortunately with my husband employed only part time now and two babies at home any upgrades are flat out of the question right now. I do realize all the parts are ancient, but the parts in the other computer are equally bad and his seems to run 10 times better. So that is what I am really trying to isolate..what is it about my system that makes it run so poorly compared to the other one even though they are very similar and equally ancient.

Your video card is designed for graphic rendering, not for high framerates. So, while it might be more powerful than whatever he has, it's not faster, and that's one of the problems.

It may work better with newer drivers, as the ones you're using are about 5 years old. Try installing the newest ones, here.

Just one more issue to add, when I attempt to install updates to my ATI drivers it tells me it couldn't find any updates that are compatible with my system or hardware. This thing would make a better paperweight than a computer.

No, you don't need hydravision for this.

The page says that net framework is required, I have net framework but only 2.0, while trying to dl 3.0 I am encountering the "Windows cannot validate" message. Is there any way to bypass this and get the 3.0 version? This is especially important because I also just read that 3.0 is now a requirement for running WoW. Any suggestions?
