World of Warcraft Lockups up Window 7
Hello,

So i recently purchased new computer parts and assembled them about 2 weeks ago. I decided to use the Windows 7 RC as my main OS and got everything up and working. After a minor problem with a wireless adapter card driver, my system seemed to be running great. I played WoW at near full setting with around 50-60 fps, also had firefox and the whole bit running smooth.

However recently when I try and load up World of Warcraft, my system locks up just as the loading screen is about to be complete. The blue bar at the bottom is full, however the system remains at the loading screen and the sound cuts out. I've tried logging on to other chars and sometimes it logs me in, sometimes the same thing happens. If I do manage to get logged in, the system is fine, it seems just getting over the inital log in screen is the problem.

The only thing that gets the computer out of this lockup is a hard reboot, and I really hate having to keep doing that when I'm trying to get this issue fixed.

I currently have the newest drivers installed for my video card, however have not updated the Bios due to the CD that came with my motherboard not being compatible with windows 7. I know this issue has plagued alot of people, hopefully someone has seem something similar before.

My system specs

MB- Asus P5Q-E LGA 775 Motherboard

Gcard- Evga GeForce GTX 260 core 216 series

CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz

HD- Western Dig. 640GB Sata Drive

Wireless Card - Linksys Wireless-G Pci adapter (With Ralink Wireless Lan Card Driver)

Ram - 8GB OCZ DDR2 SDRAM (4 sticks 2GB a piece)

PSU Rosewill RP650-2 650W, ATX12V v2.2/EPS12V v.2.91

OS - Windows 7 RC 64-bit edition

Like I mentioned, its just the loading screen, once over that everything works great. Thanks for taking a look.

Keep in mind Windows 7 is still in development.
I doubt Blizzard has any "fixes" for it.
Even your drivers may not be fully tested for Windows 7 yet.
(I see nVidia has windows 7 drivers, but with your version being in development, hard to say if they are stable.)
As it's still in test mode, It may not be fully backward compatible with WoW yet either.

You can try compatibility mode I suppose.
Most of the lockups with WoW at the loading screen are blamed on video drivers.
Also some addons can crash a log in. I was locked out of Dalaran until I disabled questhelper once. Hasn't happened since.

Could also be a background program? Something scanning or accessing the internet?
If another program "talks" while WoW is waiting for information from the server, it could get lost.

All just a few cents worth of thoughts.
Hope you find it. I know the WoW withdrawals can be murder.

Yeah I know about windows 7 still being in development, however friends of mine have run the beta version(before even RC) with no issues. I'm not sure what the cause of it is. Also this machine is brand new, the only software loaded is WoW, Microsoft office, Norton 360, and WarcraftIII, thus I don't see how any other programs would cause it to lockup.

I tried disabling my ad dons and still got a freeze, next I'm going to disable norton and see if that'll help. Appreicate your feedback.

Actually, you have a program running that will cause the program to lock up--Windows 7. Basically, the point for the release is to find out what doesn't work and report that back to Microsoft. They will test it, then report their finding to the driver (read: hardware) manufacturer for fixing. In your case, don't bother; it has already been reported.

In the meantime, I would consider getting a stronger power supply. Yours falls a bit short with a GTX 260 and 8 GB RAM.

Update, so i removed my Rosewill PSU and installed a
CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX 850W ATX12V 2.2 / EPS12V 2.91 to upgrade my available power, however am experiencing the same problem.

After doing some tests and having my friend move my character to different spots, I have come to the conclusion that I can log in to low density, low effects area, an example would be a small inn (Griz. Hills) rather than a major city (Dalaran)

I guess for now, I will have to remember to always log my chars out of the main cities and only in smaller load areas, a big inconvenience, but at least I can still play.
