Solved: Hidden game files taking up space!? Please help!
Hi Everyone,
Just recently I purchased "Stalker Clear Sky" for my computer & it wasn't letting me get past a certain point so I could progress in the game. So I uninstalled the game & thought maybe a fresh reinstall would help fix the problem. However I have just noticed that everytime I reinstall the game after removing it (I remove it properly with the uninstall feature that comes with the game) I have less space on my hard drive than before, when I installed it the first time I still had about 35GB after the install & now after I have uninstalled and reinstalled a few times I only have about 28GB, does anyone know what this problem is?

Welcome to TSG!

Maybe the temp folder the installer makes isn't getting deleted or over written.
Check your windows temp folder and see whats in there.

You could also search your computer for large files. like 300MB or more. Should list what they are and locations. If they are in a temp folder you can probably delete them safely.
(Provided your sure you don't need or want them. )

Hi Super-D,
I checked the temp folder just in my C: Drive & there are only logs in there & then the temp folder in my "Windows" folder doesn't have anything big enough worth speaking about. I have ran some searches but am still not coming up with anything, also I just verified without doing anything else other than uninstalling & reinstalling the game on my computer that I appear to be approximatly losing 1.8 GB everytime I uninstall & reinstall.

Odd. Wonder if there is a bug in the registry entries for the game. Still telling windows its there but it isnt.

Have you emptied your recycle bin then defragmented?
Maybe, just maybe, doing so will show windows its not really there and force it to recalculate.

And just to be sure, your system is clean of any spyware and viruses?

I must admit, I too am stumped. The file search should have showed any large files.
That's why I'm thinking registry. But I'm not gonna send you in there to check. Registry modification isn't to be taken lightly.

Well I just made sure my recycle bin was empty & I have performed a defragmentation of my drive twice as well as reboot the computer. Also yes my computer is clean of any viruses and spyware. I know that stumped me as well, the interesting thing is the actual size of the entire program (at least the size of the folder created in "Program Files") is about 4.8 GB but when its uninstalled it shows only 3.0 GB of that has been removed & the folder is empty. So I would guess that means either its moving files to another location or its the registry, but again this is all just a hypothetical diagnosis based on what I can see.

Are you using Vista, XP or something else? One other thing it shouldn't but could possibly be is program settings files. I know how to check for that in Vista (go to your user folder>go to AppData (hidden), and see if there are any folders with the name of your game or its manufacturer.) Alternatively It could be placing files on other user's accounts and not removing them, but 1.8 GB makes that unlikely.

I'm using Windows XP, however that folder I believe is located under "documents and settings" for XP which I have checked but the only thing I can find thats even related to the game is a few log entries from the game for "XRay Engine" (That's the game engine it uses to run it) but thats only about 2 MB so nowhere close to the data I appear to be losing.

Try redoing your search, looking for hidden and system files, and limmited to recently created files. You might also want to try running scandisk--It might tell you if the file system is acting up.

Hey,
Thanks all of you for your help, it appears as though it just wasn't registering that the files had been deleted so when I ran the Scandisk it verified the amount of space I had on my harddrive & everything seems to be looking alright now. So again thanks for all your help, I think we can consider this case solved!
