Screen turning black during games
Hi,

i've got a little problem lately. It started first when i played Overlord II. The screen suddenly turned black, sound went on for a while and when i alt-tab'ed after a minute or so sound stopped and i could get back into the game. but it kept makin this problem every few minutes so the game got unplayable. thought i wait for a patch, maybe its a game problem...
then i installed call of duty 5, same problem, only i can't get back into the game... and its got the 1.4 patch installed.
all of this happened without any error, drivers are up to date (had the driver reset problem a while back but the latest nvidia drivers seemed to get rid of it).
overheating is not the problem, gc temperature is 64°C according to everest, cpu rarely goes over 60°C.
Any suggestions? other games like fallout 3, streetfighter 4, prototype, etc. work great. all of the games are set to 1650x1080, worked fine so far... changing settings didnt work either....

btw, my specs:
P4 E8400 @ 3 GHz
Mushkin 4GB DDR2-800
BFG GTX 285 OC2
Vista 64

So you tested it on another monitor and does it have the same fault??

If yes then could be your Video card

but how come it only happens in 2 games so far... even crysis works fine at max settings and i think it need more recourses than overlord... if it would be the videocard it would happen in every game, wouldn't it? i played prototype for 3 hours yesterday and nothing happened...

Not necessarily.

Im not really sure on your exactly problem but just to give an example:

When I first stuck my 8800GT in I had problems in only 1 game (Lord of the Rings Online) in that it would randomly crash / lockup, All other games I ran at the time were fine.

After much investigation I finally tied it down to a heat issue on the GPU, which was resolved by using an aftermarket cooler, never had the problem since. The point here is that a graphics card fault / problem won't necessarily affect everything that is graphics intensive.

Your video card must be hitting it's limit. So I think you should check if it's fan can keep it cool. Also see if the video card can only meet the minimum requirements video card for the game.

1、the game doesn't support 1650x1080!
2、It's maybe video-card's driver's problem!waitting for new driver!

the cooler works fine and BFG used a good one... And if this card doesnt meet the requirements of any game... it's one of the best gc out... overheating is not a problem, like i said before it barely reaches 65°C and as far as i know thats ok for a gc right?
and with the resolution: depends on the game, i usually take 1650x1080, if not availlable i take the highest... gc could handle it with good fps (30-50, depends on game) so far...

I have had the same issue before. I tried changing power settings, updating drivers, etc. and what finally worked was just opening up the computer and cleaning all the dust off everything. I have recently been having the same problem again, and I have tried cleaning the computer again. I haven't checked to see if it worked yet.

Cleaning out the inside of the computer did, in fact, work like a charm.

But still you didn't try it now so why don't you give it a shot. Also I think this is Direct x related problem. Becasue i recall this problem when I was playing DOTA when I suddenly use a high or graphical skils that suddenly happens. ( sorry if I can exactly explained) So why don't you try ti reinstall the directX.
