Solved: Challenge: horrendous long lag spikes on EVERY GAME
Hey!
First of all I'm sorry if this question was already asked, but I couldn't think of a way of searching for it.

Okay, I've been noticing that EVERY single game I play, I get like 10 seconds on extremely smooth performance, but then, like 6 seconds of ridiculously low FPS (like 3 frames per second).

It doesn't matter if it's an old game or a new game, it always happens.

My specs:
Mobo: Asus M2N-VM DVI
Proc: AMD 64X2 5600+ 3.0Ghz
RAM: 4Gb
VGA: 512Mb GF9600Gt w/ latest drivers
OS: Win XP Pro 32

-It's not the games, as it happens on every game, old or new, randomly, even at menus and stuff.

-It's not the temperature, as it is around 45°C which is fine.

-Not the power supply, mine is 600 Real Watts

-Not a background processes issue, nothing is consuming neither RAM or CPU.

For example, with Prototype running, the CPU Usage is around 30% and the Commit Charge around 400 / 5211 M

Any help would be very... huh... ...helpful.

Thanks!

That the brand of your power supply? Not good. If not, what is it? Brand and model.

Has this always happened? How long have you been using this computer?

Thanks for the quick answer!

And it's a Zippy Emacs GSM-6600P G1 600w PSU

I've built this computer myself, it's been like 4 months.

I'm not exactly sure if this has always happened, as it really started to annoy me recently, when I started playing more often.

3 years old high quality power supply really isn't what I would've used in a new build... Standards do change a lot...
Is that 45 C the graphics card's temperature? What program reported that?
Have you been using any kind of firewall and antivirus? Which programs?

Wow is it that old? Lol but I'm not sure if that's the problem.

45°C is the CPU temperature.

I use the Avira AntiVir Personal.

And thanks again for the help and quick answers!

Is that the CPU...if so what is the Video card temp?

Does it do it straight away or after the PC has been on awhile?

When it happens do you notice any fan slowing down or speeding up?

45°C is the CPU temp.
The Video Card I don't know, downloading nTune at the moment to check it out.
It does it straight away as I restarted it several times when trying to solve the problem.

No, I didn't notice any fan speed change.

Thanks!

Okay the GPU temp is 51°C

Please help! It is very annoying. I have here GTAIV, Sims 3, X³, Prototype, Fallout 3, Fear 2, and I can't play any of them without suffering the wrath of the lag spikes.

I actually suffered from these spikes while playing Chris Sawyer's Locomotion, and I'm dead serious.

Try running Burnin Test to see if there are any faults related to your hardware

Is that the idle temp or under load?

I would use something like HW Monitor to get temperatures.

http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

I find it alot more useful as it records min and max temperatures aswell. You may be surprised at how much the temperature of a GPU can drop in the seconds it takes to task switch away from a full screen game / app.

Ouch!

so 4GB on a 32bit OS... I wonder if it's memory issue. Just for giggles, try it with 2GB, since Windows 32bit OS does not see the total 4GB.

just testing a theory out it should be fine... though who knows, it may be a memory issue.

IT could be a video card issue, or CPU issue (overheating) or a hard drive issue... just want to do one at a time.

Sorry for being out for so long, I actually had my main HD formatted, and I'm still getting the lag spikes... u.u

The CPU temperature under load is never higher than 55°C
The CPU usage under load is never higher than 30%
And the Memory usage is never higher than 30% aswell.

I'm running out of hope here...

Have you tested your memory.......and or swapped out the Video card for another one that you may have laying around?

Also I would test the HD ....there should be a diagnostics tool on the manufactures site.

Defrag lately?

Did some of these games use to work?
