What to play now?
Hi all, I did not bother to check to see if this question has been posted before because I thought the likelihood is remote LOL

I am a 66-year-old pensioner. At present I play Age of Empires – Conquerors. I have been playing this game since it first came out - the first version that is! I still enjoy playing it and play on the IGZ zone. Naturally I am slow, the old fingers and brain do not work as fast as they used to. I also play with my grandchildren 6 to 13 year old

I would like to migrate to another market leading game i.e. not some to two-bit developer whose programme keeps crashing. Reliability is key.

I am looking for an RTS game like AOE. I do not like a wham, bang thank you mam, games where you have unlimited ammunition and just blast of at passing baddies, as much fun as they may be. I prefer games where you have to use a modicum of brainpower and not just memory and speed of thought.

Any suggestions? I will have a look at them all. Remember MAIN STREAM – no rubbish please

Many thanks for any help offered

Sticking to the theme of RTS, you have Command and Conquer series, Age of Empires III, age of Mythology.

If you are not looking for multiplayer, there are older games from Impression Games, like Pharaoh, Cleopatra, Caesar...

I tried Hotel Giant 2... graphically great... gameplay no so much... couldn't get anyone to stay at the hotel... heh

I know that it's not exactly RTS but I suggest the Total War series of games. My personal favorite is Medieval 2: Total War.

Basically, Total War games are turn based/RTS hybrids. You start on a big map where you move your armies and agents, use diplomacy and build stuff. When however enemy armies get close to each other, the game turns into an RTS. Expect massive battles which require some serious tactics in order to win.

All in all a great game with great graphics and historical accuracy.

Rome: Total War is the only one of the series that I've played, and its definitely fun.

If you can get it to work (and find a copy) definitely try out Starcraft and look for Starcraft 2 if Blizzard ever releases it. The original game was made for Windows 95 I believe, so it could be tricky to get running depending on your computer's operating system.

My first games were turn based strategy (4X) such as Civilization, Master of Orion and Master of Magic. Civilization is still around (Civilization 4), and I'll still play MoM and MoO 2 occasionally but I need to use an emulator. I'm a little partial to my 4X time-sinks, though I did use to play Age of Empires II a ton.

I'd highly recommend Civilization 4 and Galactic Civilizations 2 if you want to try out that genre (Turn based Strategy / 4X). Both have a couple expansion packs.

Black & White is (I think) considered a RTS, but I could never get into it even though it got great reviews. I'm pretty sure they released a B&W 2.

There's also the SimCity franchise and the Tycoon type games. Rollercoaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon would probably get your grandchildren's interest, though I haven't played the Tycoon ones.

Everything else that I could think of has already been mentioned.

Starcraft can run under Windows XP with no problems, I can confirm this.

Again, these are not RTS games. They are great games however and I suggest trying them out as well if you want more variety. Since you liked AoE I'd say go for Civ 4 first (because of the setting).

Black & White was a revolution when it was released not only because of the way it was designed but because it used a very good AI model for the era.

Black & White 2 on the other hand was not as well received by gamers. It was a mediocre game and I'd suggest staying away from it for now.

Some guys mentioned Empire Earth, 1 & 2...These were good RTS games and very close to AoE gameplay wise...However, the latest installment on the series, Empire Earth 3, is plain bad. Stay away from it. And IMHO, Rise of Nations is more fun than Empire Earth games.

If you like history accurate games and especially the WW2 setting I'd suggest Company of Heroes. Think of it as a more advanced AoE based on WW2.

Another good WW2 game is Men of War. On this game you are given a certain amount of resources and units and you are expected to use them wisely in order to win. You can't build bases or produce extra units as on other RTS games. Men of War is more of a Real Time Tactics game but I believe you would enjoy it.

If you like the concept and gameplay of Men of War but your computer can't run it, you can try the older Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg games. These games are very fun but very hard as well. Read some reviews before buying so you can get the picture and see if they fit your style.

If you enjoy fantasy settings I'd also suggest Warhammer: Mark of Chaos or its sci-fi equivalents, Warhammer: Dawn of War 1& 2 (Note that DoW 2 requires Steam for activation).

The Civilization series is a great way to kill time. I think out of all the suggestions this would be your best bet, even though it isn't a RTS game.
