Sudden in-game lag on relatively new computer
I have had this computer for around 3 months now and up until around a month ago all of my games were running as they should be with my specs. But games like Call Of Duty 4 (which I run on the highest settings) began to lag. Where I would usually get 30 fps, I would get no more than 10. This was easily fixed my leaving the computer off for a while and re-booting. But now this problem has become permanent. Also, on rare occasions, I get blue screen errors. This happens in-game and while multi-tasking (like downloading a file while playing a game) As far as I know my video drivers are up-to-date. Any help would be great .

Specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.5 GHz
ATI Radeon HD 4650
4GB DDR2 RAM
650 GB Hard drive

Turn off background programs
In my experience main reason games slow down are due to hidden programs that don't show up on the taskbar.

I assume this is a Windows OS, here is what I try to speed up my computer.

Start - run - type: msconfig
Services tab - click Hide All Microsoft Services
turn off all services except for your antivirus and any other services you must have
Startup tab
same thing again, turn off all items except for antivirus ect.
Apply, close and reboot.

I tried this, but still no joy . The strange thing is though, that I may find that the computer is back to normal speed when i turn it on tomorrow, but find the problem has returned the next time I boot it.

By the way my OS is Vista Home Premium 64-Bit. I appreciate the quick reply, but I really want to get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Your main problem is your hardware, the 4850 is a mid gaming card...

Dont want lag? Drop those settings ingame, and the resolution... (I find that games still look very good with high res and low detail) so try to set that first and see how your fps works out...

Also a scan with malwarebytes cant hurt...

I managed to get a good FPS by turning off shadows, glow etc. But the problem is that I shouldn't have to do this because I have had everything on high settings before without a problem.
