reinstalling steam backup files
I ahve backed up my steam files through the stem backup method so i don't have to redownload all the updates when i clean install windows 7 which i'm about to do and re-install everything.

I'm just wondering to reinstall the the files you would first install steam. What next?

Do you install the games from disc (HL2/CSS/HLDM/episode1&2 ect.) then use the backup file produced from the backup?
Or do you just run the backup tool, without installing the games and will will install them through the backup files?

You should be able to just run the backup tool without having to install the games. Personally though, if you have the games on CD, I wouldn't bother backing those up and just install them from the CD. Steam will automatically update them to the latest version. But that's just me.

The OP has done the backup so he doesn't have to re-download all the updates

Jimmy, yes the backup is a complete installer in its own right. Just install Steam then install the backups and it should work fine.

Always, the easiest way to backup Steam is to copy the SteamApps folder (the entire contents), and steam.exe. Move those files onto the new system and run steam.exe. After you log in, Steam will update anything that needs updating. Doing it this way, will save all of your games, all of your settings, and all of your saved games. (Note that you don't need the Steam backup to do this.)

Steam states to install the latest version... then insert your cd/dvd while its open... from there it will be all automatic...

If you backed up to a flash or hardrive use the same method and click on the the .exe in the backup folder...

(I recently Just Did A Hardrive Backup with All my steam games and it worked flawlessly) Nice not having to download 40 gigs of data every time I format my PC! : P
