How to cool down GTX 9800 while playing games?
Hi, this is my problem: Whenever I play high graphical games my graphics card dies (shuts down computer) really quickly after starting the game due to the heat.. At 50% fan peed the card sits at 60 degrees and even on 100% speed it will overheat really fast. I heard of a device that was specifically made for the 9800 to cool it down.. Anyone know about this? Thanks for help.

If you have an extra pci slot left you can buy a pci fan... its pretty cheap check computer hardware sites or home appliance stores

There are lots of different after market GPU coolers out there, they are generally pretty easy to install in my experience.

Here is a link to the GPU cooler section at Newegg, ensure your check for compatibility with your card!

They aren't too expensive and can make quite a difference. Also ensure the inside of the case is clean a dust free. What / how many case fans do you have? Do you have good airflow in general?

@p6rtw
You should really ask If he has a graphics card with a closed plastic case or not because if he has a standard evga, bfg, xfx.etc it will have a case and a pci fan will not help.
But as Tanis said you should keep your case clean and have plenty of airflow inside it. I use 1 case fan to pull in cold air and 3 case fans to blow out hot air. works good for me my graphics idles at 34C.
Also all of this is alot easier if you have a big case for you computer because you can get bigger fans and more airflow that way.
But you need to check how many 3-pin case fan connectors your motherboard has. If you need more you need to get a molex to 3-pin converter cable.(should come free with the purchase of a fan)
But also it would be nice to know your current fan setup.

Amount of fans :
Size of each fan :
If you have more than 1 i would recommend that one pulls in cold air and one pushes out hot air.

i have a 9800gtx+ myself and i've had similar issues. terrible times....
but then i applied thermal grease to the gpu.. drastically reduced temps.. i could even clock it beyond 800..
i used coolermaster's grease that came along with their sink.
worked for me..

opened the cover..
found a very fast blower and an aluminium heatsink..
unscrewed em and pulled em out.
applied thermal grease on the gpu surface just like they do with the cpu..
put them all back on..
viola..... temps are unbelievable..
i wish i could post some pictures to illustrate but gosh.... thats a lot o work!

Download this tool and crank your fan up to 100% before gaming..

http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_...ools_6.05.html

Also post screen shots of your temps with hwmonitor...

I do put it up to 100% before playing and it still overheats pretty quick.

Run Hwmonitor in the background, play your game for 10 minutes, then post a screenshot of your temps...

This was not too bad for only ten minutes but for games like World In Conflict it can be a lot worse. You might been to zoom in quite a bit to see the numbers sorry.
