I get similar problems with my PlayStation 3 from about30 feet away and it makes me angry.. tell me if it works.
I reported the same problem to my friend and he said it was probably the router...
What kind of router are you using?
If it is like TrendNet or some other name that is not well known i would recommend using a NetGear N wireless router.

We've recently changed ISP to plusnet, i'm using the router they provided us with, a Thomson16c500, the download speed is good, and the ping aswell, usually, as i can play other online games, it's just when i start trying to play 2d MMORG's, the ping shoots up after 5-10 minutes of playing, and the download speed goes down... yet when i come off, it goes back to normal

Would you be able to find a new router?
If you can, I can't really promise yu that will help your problem... but that is what receipts are for...
But if you simply don't want to get a new router I don't have any other suggestions for you except to try getting wired or moving closer to it.

Well i'm quite close to the router, and using a wire would be a pain as the router + PC are in different rooms.. ppl have tripped over it in the past =p that's why we switched to wireless, i think part of it is that the telephone lines around where i live are still kinda old, so it's probably affecting it, thanks for your help anyway

I do understand the problem with annoying cables and cords.
And if you are still having bad connection and you are very close to your router... i am having the same problem... we are going to get a Netgear N wireless router soon and I will tell you if it solves the problem... if you want.
Sorry I could not help you any more.
