Games Freezing, Odd Colours, Sound Repeating, Unresponsive
Hey,

So here's the gist of things. When playing Modern Warfare 2 or Counter Strike Source, the game will freeze, the display will go... crazy? There are weird colors everywhere, and dots and lines, a blip of the sound repeats, and the machine becomes completely unresponsive. The only way to get back to normal is to hard reboot the machine.

Here are some photos from my phone:

Here are my system specs, generally:
Quote:
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 6000+
RAM: 3 GB DDR2 PC-6400
Video Card: EVGA 9800 GT 512
Here is my dxdiag: (I've also added it as an attachment.)

I have:
uninstalled/reinstalled video card drivers
reformatted

If it's any use, I was also getting the "nv4_disp" error quite often for about 4 days. Then it seemed to disappear, didn't see that problem for a bit, then this started. I reformatted after the 5th time it happened, tried it again and it is still happening.

Thanks in advance!

Oh Try to update your video card and sound card. And don't let many applications open when playing. Also clear your internet history before playing. If you can. try to play in windowed Mode and observe he results.

Sounds like you may be overheating. Check your fans and make sure the inside of the case is clean.

I agree with both of their statements, but I would go towards driver updates and compatibility issues. The nv4 error disp likely stands for display, so be sure that your video card display driver is up to date- AND compatibile!

Cheers!

Sound card and video card are both fully updated, and I have done this several times, and several times in safe mode with a driver cleaner and everything. I never have any internet history, and I don't see how that could contribute to this problem. I cannot play MW2 in a windowed mode, but I could try CS: Source.

I will try that.

The case is pretty clean, besides a bit of dust, and the cables are pretty bad; overall the temperatures are fine, but the video card idles at 70c, and it can rise up to about 85c; but it should not be overheating at that point.

I think the video card is just dying. Can't be sure.

Turns out you can play Modern Warfare 2 in a window.

I did so, the first time, there was no graphic or display distortion, it just froze and became unresponsive.

The second time I tried it, it froze and became unresponsive, and the screen was flashing almost, constantly at the top,
and sometimes the bottom chunk would flash to show the game behind it.
Here's a video clip of that from my phone: [click]

Yes. I could play them all I wanted for as long as I wanted, Source has never had any problems. Now in the past week, I've been getting the nv4_disp error on MW2, which had stopped; and then this new error is happening

Edit: Counter Strike Source in windowed mode was certainly interesting. While fullscreen had done the usual funny colours, artifacts everywhere, freezing, causing me to restart... Windowed mode was fine for literally 1 second, instead of instantly messing up. After that one second, the colours went kind of grayscale, everything looked kind of chrome. The text on the menu was all boxes, it looked distorted. I've seen this problem before when my computer would freeze up, then all of the textures would be replaced, in Warhammer Online, Aion, and a few times in Counter Strike Source.

I have some examples of this error from Counter Strike Source like last month. It rarely happened in Source, though.

And some from Warhammer Online:

Notice some of the symbols in the text look like funny coloured boxes; that's what I'm talking about.

I would see if you can borrow another Video Card and test and also try another monitor.

So would the best idea be to get a new video card?

Meh, don't have any extra video cards, or one I could borrow.

I'm sending my machine into the shop which built it for me, I know the guy, etc. and I have full warranty; they'll do whatever they can to find out what is wrong, and replace anything that needs to be replaced, and I don't have to pay for parts.

So, I'll update this thread and explain what they found to be the problem, or at least what the solution was. That way people from Techguy or Google can find out too.

I am in shock. Complete shock.

I got the machine back, had a little problem with the BIOS being set to boot to disc, not HD. I fixed that in a minute; the guys at the shop accidentally took my XP disc again, haha.

So, it booted up for the first time at home. It had a brand new 8600 GTS inside, which was the original card this machine had been purchased with. It was under warranty, etc, and they popped in a new one, installed the drivers and gave it back to me.

Apparently, they didn't test it.

In both MW2 and CS Source, the texture replacement thing had happened, along with the freezing, sound stuttering and repeating; and I had to hard reboot the machine to get back to the desktop with normal functions. But, there were no artifacts or funny colours like the previous times. There is still an obvious problem, it's like... it's still pork, just with a different spice.

I stared in amazement, and screamed "WHAT?!"

This doesn't make ANY sense.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE?

Edit: Nvidia released new 8 series drivers on the 26th.
Updating did nothing at all. Problem still continues. I have found not one person with the same problem or any information relating to this problem.
