New McAfee pop-up DOS window
Since my last automated Mcafee update I am experiencing a cyclical and repetitive DOS window (saUpd.exe) that opens on my screen regardless of what I might be working on. Contact with Mcafee resulted in a sales pitch for a $180 tech agreement. Is anyone familiar with this issue or has experienced it? I have a current HJT log file if this would be halpful. I run McAfee, CCleaner, ATF Cleaner routinely. Thanx to anyone who might be able to help.

Click Start > Run > type services.msc

Press Enter.

Browse to the McAfee Site Advisor service. Stop and Disable it.

Or,

Click Start > Run > type appwiz.cpl

Press Enter.

Uninstall McAfee Site Advisor.

Reinstall the latest version.

Thank you very much.....I discovered that last night and it seems to have worked. Is it possible to have you review a HJT log file for me as well?

Of course, but let me know if there's a specific issue first.

The issue is that while in an application, something as simple as solitare or on the net looking at random site the cursor "stalls" and becomes highly unresponsive, almost having a mind of its own; then returns to 'normal' response

You may have an application causing the issue or too many background processes running at the same time.

Please do submit your HijackThis log.

Restart the computer.

After restarting, when the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Uninstall Windows Desktop Search. It's a system resource hog.

McAfee isn't the best choice for a slow computer. I would first uninstall it through "Add or Remove Programs", then run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool.

If you don't mind paying for an antivirus, I would go with ESET NOD32 or ESET Smart Security.

Or, there's the free Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thank you. I have unchecked "startups" as suggested, but am having trouble finding 'desktop search' to uninstall (not listed under Remove software???). I pay for McAfee and will look into replacing but may like to hang on to until subscription ends. Also since unchecking startups and restarting computer it has slowed to a crawl accessing internet and waiting for pages to load????

Make sure you haven't unchecked anything that wasn't in my list.

1- Run HijackThis again.

2- Click on Open The Misc Tools section from the Main Menu.

3- Click on Open Uninstall Manager.

4- Click on Save list...

5- Save the text file to the desktop.

6- Copy and paste the log from Notepad into your next reply.

I found 'desktop search' on the startup tab under msconfig and unchecked it there; then restarted machine. There is one extra startup I unchecked but don't think it would have impact and that was "timeoutmonitor" for Acronis which I only use periodically. Following is list requested

Personally, with Acronis, I only keep TrueImageMonitor.exe in my Startup directory.

Looks like Windows Desktop Search isn't on your computer anymore. The normal processes it usually generates are not in your log. I think you only had leftovers from the program. Other than the location where you found it, you might also have a folder for it in C:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search\.
