Solved: 'Out of band' patch for Windows Update?
Details here; http://www.h-online.com/security/new...s-1624979.html

I'm not too sure what to make of this because, when I went to Windows Update via Control Panel, nothing happened but when I used Firefox with the IE Tab addon, I was offerred an update to the update software but didn't see the screen referred to in the article linked to above?

I assume this is being distributed automatically to those with automatic updates enabled.

Check the version on this file in system32 to see if it's been installed. If it has the version will show 7.6.7600.256.

That's interesting! My version of wuweb.dll is, apparently, 7.6.7600.257, signed by Microsoft on 5th June and it's the only one in System32?

I'm pretty certain my update files did get amended and the 'Custom' option on the Windows Update site still works for me, so I'll just have to wait and see what develops.

See this aticle:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104/

Click on the link that says "Click here to view or hide detailed information" and it explains the difference in the file versions. As long as it's 256 or higher, the update has been applied.

I'd assumed the higher number meant I had a later version, but it's good to have it confirmed.

The story highlighted by the article I linked to is obviously only of interest to the rebels like me that don't allow automatic updating or to the unfortunate people whose update failed.

I just got "Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256" that was a "Automatic Update" on "Sunday, June 24, 2012"

But I have Automatic Update turned OFF, but this one is the only this year that is a "Automatic Update"

Never knew this was going on now and then and doing a "Automatic Update" .
Looking at the Update "Source" I see a couple last year and so many now and then from pass years so guess some are ""Automatic Updates" no matter what your setting is.

But got no other updates but a lot I did last week on "Wednesday, June 20, 2012"

The Windows updater can update itself automatically when checking for updates. If you check your update history, you'll see the Windows Update Agent 7.6.7600.256 listed there and it states that in the description.
