Secunia PSI, programs Update scan ?
hi // Been looking for a program that will scan your PC and tell you if any of your installed programs need updating. Come accross this one. https://psi.secunia.com/?page=about_psi Can anyone tell me if its any good or not, or do you know of a free program that does the same and works well. Read a few reviews on Secunia PSI and people had problem with it not working, didnt find that it messed the computer up, but these were old reviews. Thanks for your time >> doj <<

The Secunia Software Inspector is fine, as long as you have an up to date version of Sun Java.

The Personal Software Inspector is still a Beta program and so should probably be treated with caution.

Just remembered that there is a software checker available at the FileHippo site which is also still beta.

It doesn't appear to require Sun Java but does need .NET Framework 2.0, so I won't be trying it even when it is final as I don't have .NET ;http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/.

I won't be using .NET until such time as some really vital program, such as my antivirus or firewall, demands it and, hopefully, that won't happen.

It is a big download on dialup and I don't want another large lump of MS software that isn't absolutely essential to me.

The latest version of Sun Java is 1.6.0.2 and the current advice is that old versions should be uninstalled and the Java folder deleted before the new version is installed. I did uninstall my old versions but never got round to the folder deletion bit!

This is a useful page for information about Java because it includes stuff about JavaScript (similar but not the same) and Microsoft's JVM, now hopelessly out of date since they lost a court case brought by Sun ; http://www.javatester.org/
