For a free antivirus, try AVG or avast(there's another called avira, but i'm not too sure about how it works). For free spyware programs use adaware and spybot(use spywareblaster for protection)for firewall,u can use zonealarm o rcomodo.(personally i just use the xp firewall)

Well.they are free for a reason....
that's not to say that they are bad, just not as good as(some)paid ones.
unfortunately i don't think there's a free one which has the detection and removal power of,say norton or kaspersky(btw i don't recommend u use norton if u decide to use a paid one)

To X H3LP M3 X

Don't worry bout the trojanhorse thing.Like golferbob,I've used avg for a period of time before without any problems. If you're still afraid,go to their home download page at http:///free.grisoft.com/doc/2/to download.

I agree Kaspersky is brilliant but it does hog resources you need more than one core really. Avg is a good option considering it is free!! Kaspersky internet security is the one i use btw. Norton upset me after i got hacked!!

Kaspersky(antiviruses in general)uses resources true, but not definitely not to the point of slowing down ur system to a crawl(unless u have a ancient computer). What's slowing down ur com is the So-called 'active/proactive-protection' part of the antivirus. And if u compare it to norton,it's miles apart. But i think the best one is NOD32.It won't drag down your system, doesn't conflict with your programs(not too many anyway... )and it's virus detection and removal powers are very good
