just in this last few days i've been getting more cases where the cpu has gone to 100% and i've had to restart as the pc has frozen. The only thing i've been doing (apart from normal browsing and gaming) is trying out different firewalls. I've had outpost, zonealarm and sygate, but have settled with zonealarm pro.

I'm using a p4@3.7ghz, 1gb ram, 7600gs, ecs 661fx-m7 mobo.
I've ran nod32, ad-aware and spybot scans in the last few days and nothing has come up apart from just some cookies. Here's my hijack this log.

if you go into task manager what process is taking all your power?

Open your tasks manager and check which process is using most of your CPU and Memory. As you install many security software on your computer, it could be some of them are conflicting.

it filckers about between taskmanager, outpost and firefox (when i had outpost). But it seems to go back to normal after i close firefox

Yes, firefox uses much resources, especially if your computer is not new and you have several tabs opened.

it's only with about 2 tabs open though, and although my pc is not brand new, i think it should be able to cope with firefox and winamp running (with nod32 and zonealarm in background)

I had a computer do this to me in the past and never did figure it out. I will say that using Symantec my PC CPU usage will be high for the first few minutes after starting the computer up.

FF 'shouldnt' bog a system down like that, tho I've seen it take upwards of 50mb of ram on my pc. I have 3gb so i dont care...

Might be worth while to scan your PC with an online scanner like Eiwdo (use IE in safe mode with networking) to be sure. Also chkdsk c: to see if you have any HDD issues.

FWIW (side note about ZA) I reloaded my main home PC and all was well until I loaded ZA, then my downloads went to crap. Thought I had a bad OS load after a few days of troubleshooting..reloaded it fresh and all was fine until the ZA load, then back to crap. Removed ZA and all reg entries, rebooted...all was fine again.

Maybe I just got a glitchy ZA download but it seems like its gone to crap over the last year or so. IMO
