Solved: Avast and Norton Clash
Hello.

For years I have been using Norton Antivirus as it came with the computer. Norton recently expired and I changed to a new ISP which included Avast on the startup disk. I installed Avast but ever since have got this message on startup:

Quote:
avast: Incompatible AV Software Running

avast! detected that the following program is running: Norton Antivirus/Symantec Antivirus

The on-access scanner module of this program and the on-access scanner of avast! CANNOT be active at the same time.

As a result, the avast! main on access scanners - Standard Sheld, P2P Shield and Instant Messaging Shield - were disabled.
The problem is after turning off Norton I cannot work out how to activate the 3 disabled scanners, and as a result I have been using the old Norton and a partially activated Avast together. Yesterday I had a trojan infection which now seems to be removed, and I think this antivirus clash may have contributed.

When I turn off Norton, do the disabled Avast scanners automatically turn on? How can I be sure? All help very much appreciated.

Thanks for the link, I am eager to get rid of Norton, I just want to make sure I know how to activate Avast properly first.

Avast will e-mail you a serial number if you don't have one ( free edition ). Simply open the program from your start menu and a box will appear asking for your serial number. Enter it and your off.

I've just flushed out Norton from the system using both add/remove programs and tools from the Norton website. Avast has all the scanners on and is working fine. Thanks!
