Question Solved: Spybot 1.5.1.15 Freezing up
I am using windows xp and I just updated to the above version of Spybot. The problem is that it will freeze up when it gets to a certain point while scanning, It will freeze here>> Running bot-check (6053/77486:CoolWWW.Search) I have uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted and have the same problem regardless. I do have ZoneAlarm but have assured that Spybot was not being blocked, Have even shut down ZoneAlarm and still had the same problem. I have made sure that the spybot is up to date as well. The same happened when I was using the older version 4.1 along with all of the updates. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

Bambi. :-)

It sounds like it is getting stuck at scanning a certain file. Try using a different spyware removal tool and see if it freezes as well. You can use a free tool like Avast. Or you can use the online spyware/virus scan Trendmicro Housecall.

Howdy Bambi,
Are you sure it totally freezes and won't recommence scanning? Mine stops in the same area and takes its time searching for the CoolWWWSearch files then after a little wait, it starts back up again. I have always assumed that particular little stinker hides itself well and that is why it pauses for a bit.
Regards
Paula

Thanks for your responses, I will try again and see if it will commence scanning. I waited for about ten to twenty minutes thinking that its working hard at scanning the one area where I think its freezing up.

I'll go the other route if that does not work that you amdgogo mentions. I have used BlackLight Rootkit Eliminator and it came up clean followed by CWS Shredder and that came up clean as well. It all started with a virus called Zlob on a friends computer. I have since cleared the virus but want to make sure that everything is functioning proper before I give my friends computer back. I too posted a HijackThis log and am awaiting a response.

When I run a scan with either Lavasoft Ad-Aware 2007(7.0.2.2) or Safer Networking Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.1.15, I walk away and do something else for 30 minutes or so, then return and deal with the completed scan.

It sometimes helps to disable or turn off your antivirus program first before you run a scan.

Howdy Bambi,
I agree with flavallee, I set the programmes to scan then go and do the cleaning and come back later. If the computer has had a previous bad virus infection, there might still be some junk there that holds up the scanning process until it is totally checked out. have you done any online scans like Panda or trend to make sure all is well?
Regards Paula

Finally the scan is done 7 hours later... Yikes!!!! In the end I ended up reinstalling Windows XP. Whew, As of last night my friends computer is back up with no problems. I posted earlier to get opinions on the Spybot 1.5 before I go there again. I too might just stick with the 1.4 Version that I had no problems with. Went to the Spybot Forum last night and saw way to many post from people that are having nothing but problems with the new version 1.5. Still allot of bugs in this version that will eventually be worked out I guess.
