Set up WPA (preferred) or WEP (not very secure) encryption on your wireless router or wireless access point. A long random character key gives the best results. You can make one up on your own or generate one at various web sites like this one:

https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Keep a copy of the encryption key as a text file in safe place. Some wireless hardware hides the key once you enter it. Enable the same encryption method using the same key on each computer you wish to connect. A USB flash drive is handy for storing the encryption key when you need to set up encryption on multiple computers.

It may also be a wise move to use a wired connection when setting up encryption on the router or access point. If you use a wireless connection, you will get disconnected as soon as the encryption is enabled. Keeping a copy of the encryption key as a text file in safe place or may also be a wise move.. Some wireless hardware hides the key once you enter it.
