low level virus text fields filled in with 666
Recently I was on a popular domain registration site attempting to change an email account name for one of my domains. About three or four keystrokes into the name change, my computer began filling the text with 666's. I immediately logged out and and rebooted thinking that it might have been a stuck key or something. Everything appeared to be fine until I got to another point where I was going to fill in a text field. I discovered that wherever I focused, any text field would get filled in with sixes.

I ran a virus scan with a recently updated copy of McAfee....didn't turn up any viruses...even the rootkit check got a clean bill of health. So, I decided that a rebuild of the OS using the system recovery disks that came with the machine was in order. The install went fine until I after the reboot and I started to filling the computer name...and you guessed it, it was being filled in with sixes.

Next step was to flash the BIOS, but after the flash, the prompt that returned got sixes. I couldn't even get the system to boot up from a 3.25 boot disk. Maybe you know a trick to get around that...so I started another OS install, but interrupted it install before it completed. Now whenever I try another install it complains, and there don't appear to be any drivers on board for the hard drive so I can format it to clean off the aborted install. I really feel stuck...

What can you tell me about this type of virus? I'm afraid I may have to replace the motherboard...something I'm not looking forward to and quite frankly, it would be a marginal investment. The system is an HP Omnibook 6100 laptop with a P3 chip and 1 GB ram. It's running (or was running) Windows 2000 Pro. I can't tell you any more about the CPU since I can get the system started at the moment.

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

I did a search on google and symantec. i can not get any info on this 6 thing.
i did find where it looked like you posted on the 7th. if it were a virus it would have been all over the internet by now..................i think.
so you have to check the keyboard for a stuck # 6. i will also check for a keyboard checker. get back if you find something.

I couldn't discover anything on the internet either that would suggest this is a virus, but the characteristics had me going....just parinoid I guess.

I took the 6 key apart and didn't see anything obvious, however I didn't see the symptoms the next time I tried to boot the computer. I've successfully installed the OS, so onward and upward...thanks for listening!
