Can anyone give advice about how to use credit cards securely over the net? I know about only using trusted sites and checking their url. But are there other ways of getting your credit card information intercepted? For instance via a tracking cookie? I already have anit-virus and anti addware software.

I would be grateful for any advice.

An https connection encrypts the traffic between you and the site, so interception is not a concern, since they cannot decypher the packet contents.

However keylogging spyware is a concern since they can capture keystrokes as you type and send them all (userid and password and url ) to the attacker. If you use credit cards to do online purchases, you should use a card with low credit limits. That way, if the credit card details are compromised , you dont lose that much.

You said you have antivirus and anitspyware programs. Thats good. Remember to let autoupdate patch Windows, and keep all software patched too. Any unpatched software is essentially a hole that lets attackers attack you by installing spyware etc. For example, an unpatched IE could get spyware installed just by browsing a malicious web site.

Btw, I had an idea. Supposing I was to type: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0. Then I could cut and paste to fill in the credit card details. I wouldn't have to use the keyboard. Do you think this would bypass the key loggers? It's a bit laborious but I don't have to fill in credit card details too often.
