"Show pictures" checkbox unchecks itself...
I came to work this morning to find a bit of virus / spyware / malware on my work PC (Win2000 was IE5, now IE6).
I've spruced the system up and got rid of all nasties, but am left with an irritating problem.

In Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, under Multimedia, the "Show Pictures" and "Show Videos" checkboxes were unchecked.
I re-checked them, but when I rebooted and re-opened IE, they had unchecked themselves again, leaving webpages with no images.

I checked the registry entries for "Display Inline Images" and "Display Inline Videos" and the Default values were set to Yes, but the current values were set to No.

Now, as it's a work PC, I don't have access to the IE options > Advanced tab under my own login, I have to login as Admin to get to that. However, the act of logging off the admin account and back onto my own also resets the values to No. I think that if you just close all browser windows and then open a new one it sometimes reverts to unchecked too, though not all the time.

I have amended my own rights temporarily to give me access to regedit, so I can go in and change the values, but I don't want to have to do this every time I need access to the internet (like just now when I logged in to TSG).

So, do you think it is residual malware stuff that several different virus and spyware checkers failed to find (including Trend Micro OfficeScan Client, Spybot, Kappersky, XScan and a couple of others), or could something else be reverting the registry changes?

Is there a way to force that value to remain as "Yes" (or the "show pictures" checkbox to remain checked)? I tried setting the value for an unchecked checkbox to Yes, but after reboot, there were again no images on any webpages, so I reverted the change. I also tried upgrading from IE5 to IE6, to no avail (though I'm sticking with IE6 for now).

Any help is appreciated.

The registry entries are in:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Internet Explorer > Main

The keys are "Display Inline Images" and "Display Inline Videos".

If I'm connected to the internet, the "Data" values periodically reset themselves to "No". It can happen whenever there's browser activity such as going to File > New Window, clicking the Back and Forward buttons, opening a new browser window from the IE icon on the desktop etc.

If I leave regedit open, the Data values onscreen appear to remain "yes" (I guess because it doesn't self-refresh). However, when I click right-click and select Modify, they are set to "no" - if I change these, I then need to open a new browser window (rather than just refresh the current one) in order to get the images to display again.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
