why can't i uninstall av and antispyware if i use sandboxie
i've been running in sandboxie and been to some pretty dodgy sites run frostwire installed it sandboxed and when i finished i just delete the sandbox and its gone so this is about testing sandboxie as i'm not game to try its capabilities with viruses i wondered if anyone here has and what insecurities if any does it have thanks

guitar,
even though I'm not as adventurous in my browsing as you,I use Sandboxie plus antivirus & antispyware 'cos my Outlook Express is not sandboxed (kept mislaying e-mail attachments!). Plus if I want to run anything that I downloaded to the sandbox I can scan with antivirus & antispyware beforehand.

Perhaps I'm overcautious and will read others' replies with interest.

I'm not that adventurous i don't even use outlook express even
but i do like the way you can install programs within sandboxie (similar to virtual machines but small download)
without it changing your settings
but i really want to know what can break it
and if not why not
i'll post here if i find anything

It is the most secure of the free ones, and better then some pay ones. But none are hermetic. VMWare's free browser appliance is very good, too.

You can uninstall all that stuff, if you want, but what about other sources of trouble? How will you know if something downloaded has a virus if you can't scan? Floppies used to be the main vector for viruses, though not any more.

Here's some comparisons. A true OS in a VM is the best idea (like Acronis 11's system virtualization option).

Another good, lesser-known one:

Fortes Grand Virtual Sandbox

Try BufferZone, too. They have free sandboxes for browsers, IM, and P2P (which, of course, none of us ever uses).

I persoanlly just use my old XP installation which I moved from my old box into VMWare so I can run it in Vista. I just surf in that and then revert to a snapshot. It's also a good place to test apps. But SandboxIE was always a favorite and I would probably be using it except that for some reason my USB kb won't let me type in it.

You mean you just sandbox the onscreen executable? It would be nice if I had a simple exe to use. But I can't seem to find the problem on the net, so it is not common. I just upgraded to 3.20.1, so I'm going to uninstall and try it fresh.

I'm not too worried about that single test result with Sandbox IE and personal information. Your information is certainly safer than it would be without it, and I keep it all in Roboform, anyway, with password protection. Other than that, SandboxIE was the most secure of the ones tested. Only a completely virtualized OS works better.

But that's easy to set up, too. Just install any OS you have kicking around in the free VirtualBox and surf from there.

A VM is already isolated from the OS. The guest OS can even crash without affecting the host. And it doesn't even use the same memory.

SandboxIE is great I use it for daily browsing,
they have ways to set it up so you don't even need a firewall with it but I'm not too sure how to set it up like that,
if you would like added protection you can also use Returnil it virtualizes your computer in memory of course making a virtual box is probably better protection (I'm not really sure) but this is a very easy way to virtualize your main partition, I've never tried making a virtual box yet but I' going to.
