Please help me with Proxy server in IE?
Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me please?

I'm using a high speed cable modem and Internet Explorer under XP. About a year ago, I learned how to use a Proxy Server. I just upgraded my cable to "high speed" and want to use a proxy server for increased privacy and security.

Using Internet Explorer, I went to the Tools Menu, Internet Options, Connections, LAN settings. Then checked the Proxy Server box and entered a proxy adress of: http://proxy and port of 8080.

Should I check the Bypass Proxy Server for Local Addresses box? Does that make any difference?

Can anyone please advise me what is likely going wrong? When I try to connect, I get one of those: "Cannot find server or DNS address" errors. I'd like to use a proxy server. What am I doing wrong?

My ISP is Rogers Cable. It's a giant cable company in Canada.

I just took a look and can't find the proxy address anywhere... you may want to call them and ask them the complete address to the proxy.

Wish I could help you with it. I'm on shaw in western canada and don't use a proxy...

The address you see is "http://proxy". That doesn't represent any real address or proxy server.

I think it is just used to provide a fake address. So you can provide any address and the site you visit sees that address instead of your real address.

At least that is my best guess how it works. I had it working at one time. Would anyone know what has gone wrong?

Aha! I know that I was able to use a proxy server at one time. But it was a couple of years ago.

So, now, the question is, ...

Can anyone tell me how I can arrange to use a proxy server and try to do some surfing that might be a little more secure?

I have been trying to get Tor working. It looks very cool. But I keep getting some error having something to do with Firefox.

I didn't have Firefox on my machine and when I installed Tor, it gave me an error message complaining that I didnn't have Firefox. So I downloaed Firefolx and now Tor gives me a different error.

Can anyone recommend a good place for me to ask for some help with that? Would you think I should just go into the closest TSG forum? Or should I try to find a dedicated Tor forum or Firefox forum?
