Unhappy Virus protection and Vista
I have had a lot of problems w/my new Compaq Presario running Vista. I share it w/another user if that's relevant. It locked us out of interactive google calendar etc. and locked up if we tried to print email. Right now it's not locking up. I reinstalled McAfee Security Suite w/o the anti spam component.
The Windows Security Center prompts me that the computer is not protected. I have several questions: Should the WSC Firewall be turned on? Why does WSC keep telling me that it "can't find antivirus protection on this computer" that was true w/Norton, McAfee and the Spyware Doctor programs. Also Windows Defender when turned on "searches for definitions" and can't find any. Should this all be turned off and leave security to McAfee?

Forget the windows firewall - It sucks litteraly.
Download Comodo Firewall from
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.c...firewall.html?

And about the WSC showing " you have no firewall" or "no antivirus"
- Ignore that too as long as u know u DO have one.
Happens to me all the time.

And don't leave spyware etc. to McAfee - Download a program ( Other than Windows defender, if you keep having troubles with it ) designed for vista. You can try SpywareTerminator

Good Luck!

Comodo isn't compatible with Vista.

Unless it was changed from the last time I checked the site.

I hate not being fully protected and I won't go with ZoneAlarm.

thanks for the help
At the moment the system seems to be working OK. I saved your suggestions in a file where I can try them out the next time McAfee screws up the computer.
Vista seems to be very problematic I'm not happy with the fact that it doesn't work the way it's supposed to and the best I can do is ignore meaningless prompts

FWIW, there's nothing wrong with the Vista firewall, it's considerably improved over the XP version. Most people will do fine with that without any 3rd party products.

thanks for the help
the vista firewall is ok so what do i do- disable the mcafee firewall. why doesn't windows defender detect whatever virus protection program i have installed? when I try and enable the windows defender firewall it goes into a search for definitions and never finds any.
