NIS 2005 Definitions 11/28/07
I went to the Live Update tonight to download the new virus definitions. However, I notice the size to be 19 MB. Did anyone else see the same thing. Is it correct? As long as I have been using NIS I have never seen a Virus Definitions download that large.
Does anyone have any comments?
What to do?
Please advise and thank you.

It's some time since I had NAV but, when I did have it, there were two ways to get updates. Live Update was just an update which was usually a few hundred KB, or you could get Intelligent Updater, which was the whole definitions database and could well be 19MB.

Thanks
I am still a bit confused. As I said, I usually downloaded the definitions via the Live Update once a week for the Norton Internet Security 2005 and it is usually around 500 KB or so, but never 19 MB, as I see for the definiitions on 11/28/07.

My wife checked her laptop and she sees the same thing (19MB) for the definitions.

Should we download the 19MB? (We don't know that much about computers and this is quite upsetting as it is the first time this has happened.)

I can't really remember now, but I think Symantec sometimes used Live Update to deliver program upgrades as well as definitions, so that may account for some of the 19MB you are seeing.

I checked the Symantec site and found that the Intelligent Updater files for 29/11 vary in size from 18.43 MB to 23.31 MB, and, when I had NAV, that was the whole database, not just an update. Intelligent Updater files are .exe files which you download and store on your desktop (or somewhere else you choose) and then doubleclick on to install.

I have seen the list of update files available via Live Update but can't see any mention of file sizes; http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/sec...oduct_NIS.html Update 82 seems to be the one that applies to you. Obviously, if you use Live Update the installation process should be automatic.

You could try raising a question with Symantec Support but I never found it very user friendly myself. In the end it comes down to whether you trust Symantec enough to accept what they are offering you. Perhaps you could update one of your computers and, if all seems well after a few hours and you have run a scan, you could do the second one. Only you can decide!
