Solved: processes = virus?
Okay, i've been told before that my computer has alot of processes running at once, and well, its pretty annoying, gotten to the point where i go into processes in task manager to end the un-neccesary ones, in search of free RAM.

I was on www.processlibrary.com looking at the odd ones to see what they were and whether i need them, and realised my computers running like 7 svchost.exe's.

The site(http://www.processlibrary.com/direct...es=svchost.exe) there, shows that svchost.exe is a system process, not to be touched. However, on the list of 'svchost.exe' to the right, i clicked the one beneath, and it lead me to(http://www.processlibrary.com/direct...svchost/22601), this profile of the process tells me that its a file associated with a trojan, i havent scanned with anti-virus for a little while, maybe 2 weeks, and yeah, i know its not smart, but it takes several hours and i'll admit, im lazy. However, i've had alot of svchost's for a while, and last time i scanned it came up with some trojan's i think, but i dunno, should i be really worried? or is it safe to have lots of svchost.exe's running?

any help is appreciated,
Sam

Svchost.exe is what runs all the services in XP and it's normal to have several running at the same time. Download Process Explorer and click on each svchost process and it will show what services each one is running. Make sure the path for all of them is C:\WINDOWS\system32. Also make sure that the path for svchost.exe is C:\WINDOWS\system32.

If you have something running that's not in system32 post a HJT log.

when you say check all of them to be C:\WINDOWS\system32, do you mean all processes? like even the program based ones? cause i've noticed alot of the ones that run as SYSTEM processes, are actually related to software.

No, just the services that svchost.exe is running and svchost.exe itself.

Get Process Explorer and you'll see what I mean.

If you have a lot of processes running then you should trim down startup programs. Run Msconfig and uncheck the ones you don't need.

This website will help you decide if you need them or not http://www.lafn.org/webconnect/mento...p/PENINDEX.HTM
