how to *disable* completely (not delete) mcaffe
just need a way to do it once or several times, so it doesn't have any running processes at all.

thanks.

Is the McAfee icon in your taskbar in the bottom right hand corner?
If you right click on it, it may say something like Disable VirusScan.

... errr, no.

mcafee doesn't let you disable it, it's that type of program.

i'm looking for either a tool or a certain sequence of actions using whatever list of programs/processes nessecary and terminating the individual processes.

you cannot just 'turn it off'.

thinking i haven't simply tried to do so is an insult to me. thankyou so much for that.

I have had McAfee in the past and it most certainly let me disable it by simply right clicking it.

The fact that you feel "insulted" is you completely overreacting.
I, in no way, was being insulting towards you. I was extending a hand to help.
You have insulted me with your rude response.

Good luck and goodbye.

i'm a baby? not very mature for a moderator to be calling others on the forum names.. no wonder you can't see why your post is an insult.

it's ok, i understand, i'm not going to blame you for your lack of brain capacity. i forgive you.

Coooolo70, being rude isn't going to help your cause. You were given valid advice, we don't truly know your level of experience with McAfee and older versions definitely did have an option to disable protection simply by clicking on the system icon. I'm sorry you feel insulted but you shouldn't have felt that way nor should you try to insult those trying to help you.

I see while I was posting you decided to add another very 'friendly' post. You've also earned yourself a 3 day ban so you can cool down. If you decide you can play nice you can come back at the end of that period.

I have been using McAfee for years, including the version you have...and you can disable it.

Let me ask...if you right-click on the shield, do you only get two options to select? One for on access scan statistics and one for about virus scan? If so, your version may be one of the enterprise build releases. The framework package allows multiple deployments with a centralized preference manager.

In order to disable McAfee under that environment, you must access the console....which is typically located in 'Start' > 'All Programs' > 'Network Associates' > 'VirusScan Console'

There you can disable on-access scan, etc... I must note however, that IF this IS such a deployment....one of the administrative advantages is in preventing users from disabling their protection by means of locking the interface with a password. If that's the case...and you don't know the password...then there's nothing that can be done.

Hope all this info was at least helpful in some way.

Not truly disabled
I, as a former McAfee user experienced the same problems disabling it. True, you can "Disable Virusscan" by right clicking the icon, but it isn't really off. If you want proof, try running a batch file or VBS script. McAfee pops right up with it's allow or block dialogue, which even if clicking allow, can prevent certain installers from working because they are not designed to function passed any failure or pause. I even went as far as using the Taskkill command in XP Pro along with the Net Stop command for the services and processes, killed every single one, checked the task manager and the Services console and all were off/gone, no tray icon, yet still that stupid Block or Allow popup persists. It must be some sort of hidden process or kernel level driver. I used rootkit revealer and process explorer but neither turned anything up that I could identify as a McAfee related process. I became so frustrated I did finally uninstall it (using MCPR.exe from McAfees support site) and installed a spare copy of Kaspersky I had lying around. Of course with Kaspersky, you really do only have to right click the icon and click exit, and it does exit COMPLETELY. Don't take this as an ad for Kaspersky or anything, just sharing my experience.
