Latest Microsoft updates......problems
OS Xp home. Just downloaded the latest security downloads from Microsoft. {12-11-07}
Everything went well. Did my restart. Now when I go to web sites that I've been to before I get an error: "Internet explorer encounter a problem and needs to close"............This just started AFTER I downloaded the latest updates. I did a system restore to yesterday, and everything is fine again. But..........now my question: These are security updates so I would assume I do need them. Do I need to make adjustments elsewhere like my security settings or are there other issues. Thanks B-72

Go back to Windows Update and note the update file that you are downloading
Latest can mean from a month ago that was never done

You can cancel the update process
But if Windows updates are set to Automatic (default) Thern the update may have already been installed

There are 7 updates to download. I update on a regular basis. I know I can cancel an update if I choose, but I don't think I want to cancel ALL 7 updates. What is the problem with one of these downloads, which is affecting my iexplorer, is what I would like to know.
I also have my downloads set to "let me choose which ones to install", not download and install automatically.

You have not stated the updates

But anyway if you do a lot of searching around by me for these symptoms.

I suspect your best approach would be to:

Default all settings in Internet Explorer 7 (Tools - Internet Options)
Remove all Cookies / Temporary Internet Files / History
Check addons (Settings - view Objects - Remove any unknown addons)
Start Run %temp% (and remove everything you can, in your temp folder)
Try Again

Failing that...
Go to add/remove programs - show updates (tick box) - Windows Internet Explorer 7
Remove
Restart
First try with IE 6 (which is now installed)
Depending on outcome - Download and install Internet Explorer 7
Note this will not remove any other Windows Security Update (except IE7)
Try Again

Look in Add/Remove for KB942615, which was the patch specifically for IE7 and, if you have it, uninstall the patch and then try to d/l and install it again. See the full list here;http://isc.sans.org/

I don't use IE so I collected all the patches I wanted with Firefox and the IETab. If all else fails, you could try and do your updates in the same way.

I also had the exact same problem right after I updated - "Internet explorer encounter a problem and needs to close". I found (by running Ad-Aware) that I had 42 problem cookies after downloading the Windows updates, which I removed. Just moments prior to downloading these Windows update I had deleted my cookies, temporary files, history, etc., and ran my anti-virus and Ad-Aware program. The only thing I can safely assume is that somehow, someway, the updates created this problem situation...which I remain baffled about! After I removed the "critical objects" my problem went away and I have not experienced any more problems.

The following are the Window Updates that Windows installed. Which one(s), if any, caused my problem (like "bonkers72") on my XP-Home IE6 OS I don't know.

Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941569) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2007 (KB890830) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB942615) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Automatic Updates
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB944653) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP (KB942615) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941569) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Security Update for Windows XP (KB941568) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB942840) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Update for Windows XP (KB942763) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update
Windows XP Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - December 2007 (KB890830) Tuesday, December 11, 2007 Windows Update

I do not have IE 7. I have IE 6. I found out which update is causing my problem: Cumulative security update for IE 6 for windows XP {KB942615} I installed all the other recent updates, {KB944653,KB942840,KB941568,KB941569,KB942763} with no problems.
TOGG, KB942615 is an update for IE 6, NOT IE 7.

There are also a number of security updates after IE7 update

You have not done the latest security updates
I'd recommend going to Windows Update and installing all security updates
And then test again

Well guess what? I just now received another error - "Internet explorer encounter a problem and needs to close" while I was on this techguy website. This is what the error message says:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: urlmon.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.3231 Offset: 0003b5ce

Any idea what is going on?

Well, I ran Ad-Aware again and I had four new tracking cookies from this site so I removed them just in case.

Also, I put "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" in my RUN window and it said: "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeded".

Does anyone have any more ideas why I'm all of a sudden getting the "Internet explorer encounter a problem and needs to close" error message?

Kimsland, I am curently ALL up to date with my critical updates. KB942615 update looks like it affects both IE 6 & IE 7. http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=101160

But IE7 is a security update

Personnally I'd download it (you may have to use Firefox if IE fails)
And fully install IE 7
"KB942615 update looks like it affects both IE 6 & IE 7"
Still perform the update of IE 7

Koot you could do the same, but actually you need a new message thread for you

I was just trying to help...because it seems I have (or had) the exact same problem as "bonkers72". I certainly did not mean to interfere or step on bonker72. Sorry...

We got to figure this out. There has got to be a glitch or another test I can run with this update. I don't want firefox and and don't want to load IE 7. What about running eventvwr to get more info on the error when it pops up. It's only on some sites, not all.
