My computer has a virus again :(
Hello, My computer has another virus. I have used Avast to detect what viruses I have. I have 'moved them to chest' but I don't think it worked. Every time I get online, a popup website comes up. Sometimes it's 'bidz.com', 'crush.com', or a few others. Avast said this is the virus I have: win32: Fake AV-C[Trj]. When the popup comes up, there is another little pop up that says "Ad served by intellegent advisor". Can anyone help me get rid of it? Thank you.

1. I would recommend you to download AVG antivirus and run in safe mode! In safe mode (without connection to intenet), you cut the viruses and trojans air supply.

2. Download SUPERAntispyware - update and run in safe mode.

3. Download HJT (HiJackThis) - Install, Scan and save a log, then post it here. A Malware expert ( goldshield) will help you shortly - step by step - free of course!

SUPERAntispyware link: http://www.superantispyware.com/

I know AVG is an old stand by, and has a great price, but its notorious for missing viruses everyone else already knows about. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on ESET's NOD32, Symantec Anti-Virus (or, if you have to, Norton Anti-Virus), or McAffee VirusScan.

Chris, not to knock on you but Symantec A/V and McAfee fall asleep on the job often themselves...

Don't let anyone fool you into thinking that a product that comes at a monetary cost is better than free....

Just my 2 cents.

I'm not concerned with cost, only real-world and laboratory performance. In such situations, I (and others) have found that the list I gave, in order, represents some of the best anti-virus products available.

Mcafee is the 5th best scanner
Symantec's Norton is 6th.

I use Mcafee, and I am very satisfied!
( But If i could choose I would have picked the number 1, Bitdefender ( only AV, Their firewall sucks, literally! )

It depends on who's ratings you check and when.

Does anyone have a Virus Bulletin subscription?

TSG reccommends due to a new policy and some Rules changes...that if you have malware found on the system> you open a Thread in our separate place for examining Hijackthis logs and dealing with Malware Removal- Our old Security forum has been divided.

I will ask that you post the Hijackthis log here for a quick look, and then we can Move your thread if need be.

Let's have you post a log from Hijackthis and maybe we can spot anything out of place:
go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
  • On that page, select one of the servers in the list under the Free Downloads heading
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Paste the log in your next reply.
  • Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi, No need to worry about making a new thread yet, or moving this one....

Please do this:
  • Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
  • Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
  • Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be asked where to save the file. Pick a place to save it then the list should open in notepad.
  • Copy and paste that list here in your reply

Do this online scan also > Kaspersky does not clean anything but it is good to get an indea of any malware on the computer.

Kaspersky online full scan
  • Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Read and Accept the Agreement
  • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
  • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
  • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
  • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of the on line scanner results into a Reply here in your thread, along with a new HJT log and log from any other scans you run.

The log you get will serve us better if you Use the manage attachments feature to attach the log to your post You can find that by scrolling down below your Reply window under Additional Optons.

Here is the Hijack this file before doing the Kaspersky scan. And just an FYI, I have Norton Internet Security 2008. It didn't help much though. So I downloaded AVG and the SUper Anti spyware program that another person mentioned. the Super anti virus saw something but it hasn't helped. The AVG found nothing.

I can't find the free scanner either. Where on the page is it?

Hi, Please uninstall this one:

IntelligentAdvisor

It should appear in your Control Panel>Add/Remove list.

Next: You are using outdated versions of Java Runtime- these are vulnerable to trojan infections, that's why they have so many Updates....get the new version downloaded first....Uninstall these:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Next:

You have an older version of SpyBot installed- here is the new one:

**Uninstall the 1.4 version after you download the 1.5 version

**Install the new version after you uninstall 1.4

Here's where to get it plus a guide for it: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tutorial/

Click the download page link and pick any server.

**** I strongly suggest you do NOT use the TeaTimer function- so, do not pick to install Tea Timer. (Unless maybe you have used it inthe past and liked it).

Follow the steps to install, Update it, and Immunize . Do a scan.

2Next:

Kapsersky has changed the website, the link we were using does not go directly to the scanner, but I found one:

http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/par...avwebscan.html

You should turn off any popup blockers as they may prevent the next windows from appearing.

You may get a couple of prompts from XP's Security Center Information bar at the top of your page- you have to Allow these...
When the ActiveX "Run" small window opens, you have to click "Run" or "Install" to load them.

Refer to my previous reply for all the directions, and hope it works this time!

Include a new Hijackthis log also
