| Solved: Near XP Home lockup at login Hello: I have an ACER laptop running XP Home that I use for basic remote desktopping. I rarely logoff but constantly go into hibernation. It might be a coincidence but this occured just after Windows Update. Upon a normal boot, I get to the login screen and the system nearly locks up. It takes several seconds for the OS to recognize a keystroke or a mouse movement. If I wait a few minutes to get the password in, it takes a long time for the system to finish the login (almost as if another process is running) but I used Hijack this and nothing wierd appeared to exist. I used AVG to check for viruses and got an error that it was unable to read the boot sector. All of these issues go away in Safe mode which is how I am typing this post. Any ideas? I am not very hardware savy ![]() Here's a quick log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA) Scan saved at 1:40:00 PM, on 12/26/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) Boot mode: Safe mode with network support Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Documents and Settings\Auggie\Desktop\UTILITIES\HiJackThis_v2.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgwb.dat R0 - | I think I am getting in way over my head. I decided to reinstall XP as it probably deserves a cleaning and it's just a slave PC with no real data on it that is needed. I put in my XP disc and it started to reinstall XP and then my laptop shut off during the copying of the files. I thought the battery died but it keeps doing it in the same similiar spot. I tried to reboot off the files on the HD but I get a "NTDLR is missing" error message at boot-up. I think I severely screwed myself here. I should be able to reinstall the OS? Do I have a hardware problem or something? I even went into the BIOS and put back the defaults back to factory and same thing... What's wrong here? |
